1 AN ACT with regard to schools.
2 Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
3 represented in the General Assembly:
4 Section 5. The School Code is amended by adding Sections
5 10-20.31a and 34-18.18a as follows:
6 (105 ILCS 5/10-20.31a new)
7 Sec. 10-20.31a. Policy concerning potentially violent
8 students. Each school board must adopt a policy concerning
9 students whose behavior or school work demonstrates a
10 potential for violence or threat to the safety of others.
11 The goal of the policy shall be the early identification of
12 potentially violent or dangerous students so that appropriate
13 intervention may take place to minimize the risk of violence
14 and to ensure the safety of others at school and in the
15 community at large. The policy must at a minimum provide for
16 all of the following:
17 (1) A description of the types of behavior or
18 school work that are covered by the policy.
19 (2) A process for referral and record keeping.
20 (3) The prompt reporting of such behavior or school
21 work to the superintendent or the superintendent's
22 designee.
23 (4) An assessment of the risk presented, made by a
24 school counselor or other trained personnel.
25 (5) Referrals for counseling by a school counselor
26 or a community provider in appropriate cases.
