1 SENATE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The members of the Senate of the State of
3 Illinois were saddened to learn of the death of Levi Moore,
4 Sr. on Saturday, October 26, 2002; and
5 WHEREAS, Mr. Moore was born in August of 1920 in
6 Waterford, Mississippi to Will and Edna Moore and was the
7 oldest of six children; he was raised and received his formal
8 education in Holly Springs, Mississippi; he moved to East St.
9 Louis in 1938 and married Dr. Bettye J. Moore in 1957; she
10 preceded him in death in 1993; and
11 WHEREAS, Mr. Moore had a very successful and diverse
12 professional life; he initially worked as a laborer at the
13 Illinois Paper and Aluminum Ore companies; he then began his
14 career in government, serving as a special investigator for
15 the State's Attorney's office, a foreman for the City of East
16 St. LouisStreet Department, an inspector for the City of East
17 St. Louis Building Department, and deputy sheriff for St.
18 Clair County; later in his career, he founded the Model
19 Woodcraft furniture manufacturing company; and
20 WHEREAS, Mr. Moore was an active and energetic member of
21 the political community; under the tutelage of veteran
22 politicians Elitor Wallace, Ted Gaten, and Ted Broach, he
23 worked as a precinct captain and won his first election in
24 1940 as precinct committeeman; he spent over 60 years in
25 politics and served as a precinct committeeman in three
26 precincts and multiple terms as the chairman of the East St.
27 Louis Republican Party; in addition to serving as an advisor
28 to numerous municipal, county, and state officials, he was a
29 guest at numerous State political conventions, gubernatorial
30 inaugurations, and three presidential inaugurations; and
31 WHEREAS, Mr. Moore was a member of Wesley-Bethel United
32 Methodist Church and the East St. Louis Business and

1 Professional Men's Club; and
2 WHEREAS, His passing has been deeply felt by all who knew
3 him, especially his son, Levi B. Moore, Jr. and his brother,
4 Collie Moore; therefore, be it
5 RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SECOND GENERAL
6 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing
7 of Levi Moore, Sr. and offer our sincere condolences to his
8 family and friends; and be it further
9 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
10 presented to the family of Levi Moore, Sr. with our deepest
11 sympathy.
