1 SENATE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, It has come to the attention of the members of
3 the Illinois Senatethat diabetes has reached epidemic
4 proportions in the United States; and
5 WHEREAS, In Illinois there are approximately 795,000
6 residents who have been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and
7 many others still remain undiagnosed or untreated; an
8 estimated 397,000 of those people have not been able to
9 achieve adequate blood sugar control and are at an increased
10 risk for the serious consequences associated with
11 uncontrolled diabetes, such as blindness, nerve damage,
12 amputation, kidney disease, and dialysis; and
13 WHEREAS, More than half of Americans with diabetes who
14 are undergoing treatment have unacceptably high blood sugar
15 levels; the American Diabetes Association (ADA) has
16 established, as a goal, a blood glucose level of less than
17 7%, as measured by the A1C test, which measures blood glucose
18 levels over a two-month period; achieving this goal will help
19 reduce the risk of serious complications; and
20 WHEREAS, There is a great need for the community-at-large
21 to commit to ensuring that diabetes is properly monitored and
22 treated in the United States; therefore, be it
23 RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SECOND GENERAL
24 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that this body is
25 committed to helping to ensure that those with diabetes are
26 living healthier lives; and be it further
27 RESOLVED, That the members of this body challenge all
28 citizens of Illinois to help everyone affected by diabetes to
29 "Get to Goal," which means achieving a blood glucose level of
30 7% or less; that anyone affected by diabetes, whether
31 practitioners, educators, policy-makers, patients, or

1 caregivers, are urged to pledge their commitment to advancing
2 this cause; and be it further
3 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
4 presented to the American Diabetes Association.
