1 SENATE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate wish to
3 express their sincere condolences to the family and friends
4 of Lester J. Harman, who passed away on August 25, 2002; and
5 WHEREAS, Lester J. Harman was born on September 4, 1916
6 in Chicago, Illinois; he was a resident of Lake Forest for
7 over 26 years; and
8 WHEREAS, Mr. Harman attended Byford Elementary School and
9 Austin High School, where he served as President of the Class
10 of 1934 and was the captain of the basketball team; he earned
11 his bachelor's degree with honors and master's degree from
12 Northwestern University, where he also lettered in basketball
13 and baseball; in addition, Mr. Harman taught at North Park
14 Academy and coached basketball at North Park College; and
15 WHEREAS, Lester Harman served in World War II as a
16 Lieutenant and division officer on staff, Comair 774 Fleet,
17 United States Navy, aboard the U.S.S. Tangier and the U.S.S.
18 Currituck; he was award the Bronze Star; and
19 WHEREAS, After the war, Mr. Harman taught at Holmes and
20 Whittier Schools in Oak Park; he was a counselor and baseball
21 and basketball coach at Barrington High School from 1942 to
22 1952; he also refereed basketball, including Big Ten
23 basketball; from 1952 until his retirement in 1975, he served
24 as Principal and then Superintendent of North Chicago
25 Community High School; and
26 WHEREAS, Mr. Harman strongly believed in community
27 support and volunteered in many community service
28 organizations, including service on President Nixon's
29 Advisory Council for Education; he was elected to the IHSA
30 Coaches Hall of Fame and served as President of the North
31 Chicago Lions Club, President of the Lake County Navy League,

1 and Post Commander of the Lake Forest American Legion; he
2 also served on the Lake County Board and was Chairman of the
3 Finance Committee; and
4 WHEREAS, The passing of Lester Harman will be deeply felt
5 by all who knew and loved him, especially his loving
6 children, Steven Harman, Pamela Bernardi, Darrel Harman, and
7 Randall (wife, Rita) Harman; his grandchildren, Aimee
8 (husband, Eric) Messner, Craig Bernardi, Davin (wife, Kim)
9 Bernardi, Meredith Harman, and Kyle Harman; and his
10 great-grandsons, Grant, Parker, and Landen Messner; he was
11 preceded in death by his wife, Jayne Harman, his son-in-law,
12 Gerald Bernardi, his brothers, Clifford, Leonard, and William
13 Harman, and his parents, John and Alma Harman; therefore, be
14 it
15 RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SECOND GENERAL
16 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the death of
17 Lester J. Harman of Lake Forest; and be it further
18 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
19 presented to the family of Lester J. Harman with our sincere
20 condolences.
