1 SENATE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate wish to
3 express their sincere condolences to the family and friends
4 of the Reverend Paul Lindstrom, who passed away on May 22,
5 2002; and
6 WHEREAS, Reverend Paul Lindstrom was born November 6,
7 1939 in Park Ridge and graduated from Maine Township High
8 School in 1957; he attended the University of Illinois at
9 Urbana-Champaign, where he earned a bachelor's degree in
10 history in 1961; that same year, he married his wife,
11 Florence; and
12 WHEREAS, The Reverend Paul Lindstrom was the founder of
13 the Christian Liberty Academy and a pioneer of the Christian
14 home schooling movement; and
15 WHEREAS, Reverend Lindstrom was the driving force behind
16 the Arlington Heights-based Church of Christian Liberty,
17 whose missionaries work worldwide, and its academy, the
18 34-year-old Christian Liberty Academy, which, under the
19 tutelage of Reverend Lindstrom, has grown from 50 students to
20 more than 900 and from one Northwest suburban locale to
21 include branch schools in Sudan and Cape Town, South Africa
22 and which provides home-schooling materials to thousands more
23 across the United States; and
24 WHEREAS, Reverend Lindstrom also courted controversy,
25 from his Remember the Pueblo Committee in 1968, when North
26 Korea captured a Navy surveillance ship, the U.S.S. Pueblo,
27 in international waters and held the crew captive for 11
28 months, to last year's call for a national boycott of
29 Chinese-made goods after a U.S. Navy surveillance plane was
30 held by Chinese authorities after a mid-air collision with a
31 Chinese interceptor jet; in addition, he was involved with
32 the POW/MIA issue during the 1970s and 1980s and opposed the

1 United Nations, which he once called "a multimillion dollar
2 rip-off."; and
3 WHEREAS, In 1996, Reverend Lindstrom fought plans to
4 place an abortion clinic in Arlington Heights, and in 1999,
5 after the shootings at Columbine High School in Colorado, he
6 called on parents to pull their children out of public
7 schools, while simultaneously arguing for metal detectors and
8 security guards to be placed in those same schools; and
9 WHEREAS, Reverend Lindstrom preached his final sermon at
10 the Church of Christian Liberty on May 5, 2002; his last
11 message was encouragement to be faithful to the word of God,
12 and to never compromise; and
13 WHEREAS, In addition to his wife, Reverend Lindstrom is
14 survived by his children, Karla McHugh, Kim Rapp, Peter
15 Lindstrom, and Calvin Lindstrom; his sister, Carolyn
16 Buchanan; and his 16 grandchildren; therefore, be it
17 RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SECOND GENERAL
18 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with
19 all who knew him, the death of the Reverend Paul Lindstrom of
20 Prospect Heights, Illinois; and be it further
21 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
22 presented to the family of the Reverend Paul Lindstrom with
23 our sincere condolences.
