1 SENATE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate wish to
3 express their sincere condolences to the family and friends
4 of Dr. Irving C. Hudlin, who passed away on January 30, 2002;
5 and
6 WHEREAS, Born on August 14, 1926, Dr. Hudlin was the son
7 of the late Edward and Myrtle Hudlin of East Saint Louis and
8 the descendant of black pioneer families in the Greater Saint
9 Louis Area; Dr. Hudlin married Thelma MacGruder Hudlin, an
10 army nurse, on December 6, 1952; and
11 WHEREAS, Dr. Hudlin was a retired Lieutenant Colonel of
12 Special Forces and a war hero; after graduating from Lincoln
13 High School in East Saint Louis, he began his career in the
14 United States Army in 1944 and, after World War II, returned
15 to fight in Korea in 1950 as a member of the 82nd Airborne
16 Paratroop division; in 1962, he served in Southeast Asia and
17 completed many tours of combat; he received numerous
18 decorations for valor, including three bronze stars, the
19 Legion of Merit with oak cluster, and various decorations for
20 bravery in battle; as a Green Beret, he fought with
21 counter-insurgency units behind enemy lines and as a
22 paratrooper, he made over 25 flights over hostile territory;
23 in addition, he authored an article on the role of military
24 advisors in war that became a standard text used by the U.S.
25 Army and some of his military exploits are recorded in
26 memoirs written by men who served with him; and
27 WHEREAS, After his retirement from the armed forces in
28 1974, Dr. Hudlin became a senior administrator at Southern
29 Illinois University in Edwardsville; during his years in the
30 service, he earned his undergraduate B.S. Degree from the
31 University of Nebraska at Omaha; at SIUE he earned two Master
32 degrees in Counseling and in Business; he completed his

1 education by earning a Ph.D. in political science from Saint
2 Louis University; he retired from SIUE in 1992; upon
3 retirement, he engaged in various philanthropic enterprises
4 as a member of the Glen Carbon Library Board and as a member
5 of the Knights of Columbus; and
6 WHEREAS, A resident of Glen Carbon for the past 25 years,
7 Dr. Hudlin was a devout Catholic and Lay Reader for St.
8 Boniface Church in Edwardsville; and
9 WHEREAS, Dr. Hudlin was part of a lineage who proudly
10 served their country in the United States military; his
11 father, Edward Hudlin, Sr., was a soldier who served in
12 France during World War I; his brother, Warrington Hudlin,
13 was a soldier and journalist, who wrote for the Stars &
14 Stripes at the end of World War II; and his son, Dr.
15 Christopher Hudlin, was a surgeon in the U.S. Navy and now
16 has his private practice in San Francisco; in addition, his
17 brother-in-law, Charles McClelland, was an engineer in the
18 United States Navy; and
19 WHEREAS, The passing of Dr. Irving C. Hudlin will be
20 deeply felt by all who knew and loved him, especially his
21 wife, Thelma Hudlin; his son, Dr. Christopher Hudlin; his
22 daughters, Colleen (Max) Wilkerson and Sharon (Dr. Pierre)
23 Morris; and his seven grandchildren; therefore, be it
24 RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SECOND GENERAL
25 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with
26 all who knew him, the death of Dr. Irving C. Hudlin of Glen
27 Carbon, Illinois; and be it further
28 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
29 presented to the family of Dr. Irving C. Hudlin with our
30 sincere condolences.
