1 SENATE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate were saddened
3 to learn of the death of Huldah W. Schiedler of Batavia on
4 February 1, 2002; and
5 WHEREAS, Ms. Schiedler was born on March 21, 1906, in
6 Cortland, Nebraska; she was the daughter of Oscar and Flora
7 Hoffman; and
8 WHEREAS, Ms. Schiedler attended the University of
9 Nebraska in Lincoln, Nebraska, where she received her
10 teacher's certificate; she taught all eight grades in a
11 one-room school house in Cortland; and
12 WHEREAS, Ms. Schiedler and her husband, John, whom she
13 married on September 17, 1929, moved to Batavia after their
14 honeymoon; and
15 WHEREAS, Ms. Schiedler was well known among Batavia's
16 teenage community during the 1950s and 1960s because of the
17 youth center, The Huddle, which she directed for 18 years;
18 she is credited with pioneering locally the concept of a
19 youth center; and
20 WHEREAS, Huldah Schiedler taught Sunday school at the
21 First Baptist Church of Batavia, where she was an active
22 member; she also became superintendent of primary grades and
23 helped with Thursday school; in other areas of community
24 service, Ms. Schiedler served as commissioner for the local
25 Girl Scouts troop, later becoming president following a
26 change in format in the organization; she was named Batavia
27 Citizen of the Year in 1964, and a street, Schiedler Drive,
28 was named in honor of the Schiedlers; and
29 WHEREAS, Huldah Schiedler's passing will be deeply felt
30 by her family and friends, especially her four daughters,
31 Shirley (Martin) Mortensen, Dolores Nelson, Donna (Alan)

1 Read, and Roberta (Ralph) Jaschob; her son, Robert
2 (Elizabeth) Schiedler; and her 19 grandchildren and 32
3 great-grandchildren; therefore, be it
4 RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SECOND GENERAL
5 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the death of
6 Huldah W. Schiedler and extend our sincere condolences to her
7 family and friends; and be it further
8 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
9 presented to the family of Huldah W. Schiedler.
