1 SENATE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate wish to
3 express their sincere condolences to the family and friends
4 of Joseph G. Turek, who passed away on February 3, 2002; and
5 WHEREAS, Joseph G. Turek was born on December 12, 1935 in
6 Chicago to Joseph John and Antonette Turek; he grew up in
7 Berwyn, Illinois, and following graduation from Morton High
8 School, he attended Morton Junior College before enlisting in
9 the United States Army in 1954; and
10 WHEREAS, Joseph Turek married Loretta Jeanette Souta on
11 June 4, 1960 at St. Leonard's Church in Berwyn; they made
12 their home in Berwyn until 1967, when they moved to West
13 Chicago; in 1976, Mr. and Mrs. Turek moved to St. Charles
14 where they operated Tanglewood Marine and Kennels together
15 with their children, Joey and Lynda; and
16 WHEREAS, In his twenties, Mr. Turek began building and
17 racing midgets, sprint cars, and fuel dragsters and in 1957
18 won the World Series of Drag Racing; he developed the Tornado
19 Speed Shop which created "The Viper", the fastest unblown
20 fuel dragster in the country, and raced the first twin-engine
21 dragster for television's Tommy Ivo; and
22 WHEREAS, As the second president of the United Drag
23 Racers Association, Mr. Turek instituted the first Olympics
24 of Drag Racing which is still held every Memorial Day at
25 Union Grove, Wisconsin; in the world of Offshore Powerboat
26 Racing, Mr. Turek and his son, "Joey" placed third in the
27 world as the Crazy Rhythm Race Team in 1992; and
28 WHEREAS, Mr. Turek's other hobbies included raising
29 standard bred horses and Champion English Setters; and
30 WHEREAS, Mr. Turek was a member of the American Powerboat
31 Association, the Great Lakes Offshore Power Boat Racing

1 Association, the Western and English Setter Club, and the
2 English Setter Association of America; and
3 WHEREAS, The passing of Joseph G. Turek will be deeply
4 felt by all who knew and loved him, especially his wife,
5 Loretta "Lori"; his mother, Antonette; his daughter, Lynda
6 (Christopher) Jacobs; his son, Joseph G. (Jennifer
7 McPartland) Turek; his sister, Susan (Kenneth) Hackbarth; his
8 brother-in-law, Rudolph Souta; his nephews, Mike, Brian, and
9 Tim Hackbarth and their families; and many friends and
10 associates across the country; therefore, be it
11 RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SECOND GENERAL
12 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with
13 all who knew him, the death of Joseph G. Turek of St.
14 Charles, Illinois; and be it further
15 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
16 presented to the family of Joseph G. Turek with our sincere
17 condolences.
