1 SENATE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The long-term aviation infrastructure needs of
3 Northeastern Illinois and the current airport capacity
4 shortage in that region have been and continue to be the
5 subject of much public attention; and
6 WHEREAS, Merrill C. Meigs Field annually handles
7 approximately 40,000 flights, generates substantial business,
8 convention, and tourism activity for the region, serves a
9 valuable public safety role related to air-sea and high-rise
10 rescues, emergency medical transport, and disaster relief,
11 helps control the airspace over downtown Chicago, and acts to
12 relieve congestion at Midway and O'Hare International
13 airports; and
14 WHEREAS, numerous aviation and business organizations
15 have expressed their support for keeping Meigs Field
16 permanently open, including the Air Line Pilots Association,
17 the Aircraft Electronics Association, the Aircraft Owners and
18 Pilots Association, AirLifeLine Midwest, the Chicago Area
19 Business Aviation Association, Local 2 of the Chicago
20 Firefighters Union, the Civic Committee of the Commercial
21 Club of Chicago, the Experimental Aircraft Association, the
22 Friends of Meigs Field, the General Aviation Manufacturers
23 Association, Helicopter Association International, the
24 Illinois Association of Air and Critical Care Transport, the
25 Illinois Aviation Trades Association, the Illinois
26 Manufacturers Association, the Illinois Pilots Association,
27 the Illinois State Chamber of Commerce, the International
28 Council of Air Shows, the Michigan State Bureau of
29 Aeronautics, the National Aeronautic Association, the
30 National Agricultural Aviation Association, the National Air
31 Traffic Controllers Association, the National Air Transport
32 Association, the National Association of State Aviation
33 Officials, the National Business Aviation Association, the

1 Professional Aviation Maintenance Association, the Small
2 Aircraft Manufacturers Association, Tuskegee Airmen Inc., the
3 Chicago "DODO" Chapter, the United States Pilots Association,
4 and Wisconsin Manufacturers and Commerce; therefore, be it
5 RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SECOND GENERAL
6 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we respectfully
7 encourage the Governor and the Mayor of Chicago to keep Meigs
8 Field permanently open as part of their final negotiated
9 aviation infrastructure plan for the Chicagoland region; and
10 be it further
11 RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be
12 delivered to the Governor and the Mayor of Chicago.
