1 SENATE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, On September 11, 2001, people across the United
3 States began what they thought was a typical Tuesday, heading
4 to work or getting the children ready for school; and
5 WHEREAS, Our morning routines were savagely interrupted
6 by the horrific news that our nation was under attack; and
7 WHEREAS, Terrorists hijacked four flights that left from
8 airports in Boston, Newark and Arlington, Virginia, and were
9 headed to Los Angeles or San Francisco; and
10 WHEREAS, The hijackers subdued the planes? passengers and
11 crews and crashed two of the airliners into the World Trade
12 Center in New York City, one airliner into the Pentagon in
13 Arlington, Virginia, and the fourth airliner in a field in
14 Somerset County, Pennsylvania; and
15 WHEREAS, All those on board American Airlines Flight 11,
16 United Airlines Flight 93, American Airlines Flight 77 and
17 United Airlines Flight 175 were killed; and
18 WHEREAS, The impact of the planes severely damaged the
19 Pentagon and resulted in the complete collapse of the two
20 110-story World Trade Center towers; and
21 WHEREAS, Tens of thousands of people work in or visit the
22 World Trade Center towers on any given day; and
23 WHEREAS, After the planes hit the Trade Center towers,
24 New York EMT's, firefighters and police officers rushed to
25 the scene; and
26 WHEREAS, The south tower of the World Trade Center
27 collapsed just over an hour after it was hit; and
28 WHEREAS, The north tower fell just 22 minutes later; and
29 WHEREAS, Hundreds of public safety personnel who were

1 trying to help evacuate the building or tend to the injured
2 were also trapped in the buildings or killed by falling
3 debris; and
4 WHEREAS, Thousands of EMT's, firefighters and police
5 officers from all over the United States left their homes and
6 families to come to New York, Arlington, Virginia and
7 Pennsylvania; and
8 WHEREAS, These courageous men and women have worked
9 around the clock in physically dangerous and psychologically
10 daunting conditions to search for thousands of missing
11 people; and
12 WHEREAS, EMT's, firefighters and police officers put
13 their lives on the line each time they answer a call;
14 therefore, be it
15 RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SECOND GENERAL
16 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we honor the EMT's,
17 firefighters and police officers who died in the line of duty
18 on September 11, 2001, and that we thank the thousands of
19 EMT's, firefighters and police officers from across the
20 United States, many of them from Illinois, who have aided the
21 rescue efforts; and be it further
22 RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be
23 delivered to the Governor of the State of New York, the Mayor
24 of New York City, the Governor of the Commonwealth of
25 Virginia, the Governor of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania,
26 and the Illinois Fire and Police Commissioners Association,
27 with our most sincere appreciation for the dedication of
28 these brave public safety personnel.
