1 SENATE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate wish to
3 express their sincere condolences to the family and friends
4 of Tim Weigel, who passed away on June 17, 2001; and0
5 WHEREAS, A popular sportscaster who was the sports
6 director at WBBM-Channel 2 for the past six years, Tim Weigel
7 was known for his colorful attire and his fun-loving approach
8 that he brought to his sports broadcasts for over 30 years;
9 and
10 WHEREAS, Tim Weigel was born on March 4, 1945 in Gurnee,
11 Illinois; he received his bachelor of arts degree in history
12 from Yale University and his master of science degree in film
13 from Northwestern University; and
14 WHEREAS, Mr. Weigel began his sports journalism career in
15 1971 as a columnist for the now defunct Chicago Daily News;
16 his newspaper career continued in 1995 with the Chicago Sun
17 Times; and
18 WHEREAS, Mr. Weigel began his career in television at
19 WMAQ-TV in 1975; he later served as the sports director at
20 WLS-TV from 1977 to 1994 and in 1995 became the sports
21 director for CBS-2 Chicago; and
22 WHEREAS, Tim Weigel covered sports for over 30 years;
23 during that time he hosted a variety of sports shows,
24 including Face 2 Face and all of the Chicago Bear
25 programming; he was best known for his penchant for utilizing
26 sports bloopers as a regular feature in his broadcasts,
27 creating the popular "Weigel's Wieners"; and
28 WHEREAS, In addition, Mr. Weigel enjoyed a career on the
29 radio; most recently his newscasts were heard on WLUP-FM; he
30 was also heard on WMAQ-AM from 1975 to 1981 as "Timmy
31 Whiteshoes Weigel", on WJPC-AM with radio personality Tom

1 Joyner from 1981 to 1982, and on WRXR-FM in 1985 and 1986;
2 and
3 WHEREAS, Mr. Weigel earned an array of awards during his
4 esteemed television career, including four Chicago Emmy
5 awards; and
6 WHEREAS, Mr. Weigel served as a member of several
7 organizations, including the Off the Street Club, the Chicago
8 Chamber of Commerce youth motivation board, the Evanston
9 Shelter for Battered Women, the Evanston Homeless Shelter,
10 and the Salvation Army; and
11 WHEREAS, The passing of Tim Weigel will be deeply felt by
12 all who knew and loved him, especially his wife, Vicki; his
13 sons, Rafer and Teddy; his daughter, Jeniffer; his father,
14 John Jacob Weigel; his brother, Tony; and his sister, Denise;
15 and
16 WHEREAS, Tim Weigel will also be dearly missed by his
17 colleagues at CBS-2 Chicago as well as his former colleagues
18 and the thousands of sports fans who tuned in every evening
19 to see the vibrant sports reports that made him a virtual
20 icon in the Chicago area; therefore, be it
21 RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SECOND GENERAL
22 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with
23 all who knew him, the death of Chicago sports personality Tim
24 Weigel; and be it further
25 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
26 presented to the family of Tim Weigel with our sincere
27 condolences.
