1 SENATE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The mission of the Boy Scouts of America is to
3 teach young men valuable skills, morals, and ethical values
4 through community service, a challenging outdoor program, and
5 by teaching self-respect, respect for nature, and respect for
6 other people; and
7 WHEREAS, The values of the Boy Scouts of America are
8 reflected in the Scout Oath and Scout Law; the Scout Oath
9 summarizes Boy Scout values as follows:
10 On my honor I will do my best
11 To do my duty to God and my country
12 and to obey the Scout Law;
13 To help other people at all times;
14 To keep myself physically strong;
15 mentally awake, and morally straight; and
16 WHEREAS, The Scout Law requires that a scout be
17 trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind,
18 obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean, and reverent; and
19 WHEREAS, The Boy Scouts of America has selected its
20 scoutmasters and other Boy Scout leaders on the basis of the
21 highest standards believing that strong leaders and positive
22 role models are important to the healthy development of young
23 people; and
24 WHEREAS, The Boy Scouts of America has utilized a merit
25 badge program; this program enables young men to explore and
26 earn recognition in more than 100 fields of skill, including
27 camping, cooking, first aid, swimming, citizenship, canoeing,
28 home repairs, lifesaving techniques, and many others; and
29 WHEREAS, Scouts engage in a wide range of community
30 service activities, including collecting food for the needy,
31 visiting people in nursing homes and hospitals, and leading

1 recycling efforts in their community; and
2 WHEREAS, The Boy Scouts of America has a commitment to
3 public service; this commitment is reflected in the Boy
4 Scouts of America goal of committing each scout to twelve
5 hours of community service each year; and
6 WHEREAS, The Boy Scouts of America has served more than
7 100 million members and their families through its more than
8 90-year history; and
9 WHEREAS, There are more than 90,000 charter
10 organizations, over 3 million youth members, and more than
11 1.2 million adult volunteers in a variety of programs,
12 including the Tiger Cubs, the Cub Scouts, the Webelos Scouts,
13 the Boy Scouts of America, the Ventures, and the Varsity
14 Scouts; these numbers reflect what a great appeal the Boy
15 Scouts of America program has across the United States;
16 therefore, be it
17 RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SECOND GENERAL
18 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, That the members of the
19 Illinois State Senate join the citizens of the State of
20 Illinois in appreciation and celebration of the Boy Scouts of
21 America for their fine work on behalf of young people across
22 the country; and be it further
23 RESOLVED, That the Governor of the State of Illinois is
24 asked to proclaim an annual Boy Scouts of America Day for the
25 State of Illinois; and be it further
26 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution shall
27 be sent to the Governor of the State of Illinois and the
28 Central Region Boy Scouts of America.
