1 SENATE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened
3 to learn of the death of George Raymond Calhoun of East St.
4 Louis, Illinois; and
5 WHEREAS, George Calhoun was born in Brooklyn, Illinois,
6 on March 27, 1907; his parents were George Bernard and
7 Harriett Anna Calhoun; he attended the Brooklyn schools and
8 graduated from Lincoln Senior High School in East St. Louis
9 in 1929; and
10 WHEREAS, George Calhoun had many careers during his life,
11 including serving as a Pullman train porter, transporting
12 soldiers to their destinations; he was a professional
13 baseball player with the East St. Louis Colts; he served as
14 Secretary for the Board of Education, School District #188;
15 from September 15, 1948 to January 31, 1981 he worked as
16 supervisor with the St. Clair County Highway Department; for
17 many years Mr. Calhoun and his wife operated Scotia's Fine
18 Foods in East St. Louis; and
19 WHEREAS, George Calhoun was a member of Mt. Zion
20 Missionary Baptist Church in East St. Louis, where he served
21 as Chairman of the Trustee Board for many years, and was a
22 Trustee at the time of his passing; Mr. Calhoun received
23 accolades from the University of Illinois and Illinois House
24 of Representatives for his outstanding and dedicated service;
25 and he was a lifetime member of the NAACP; and
26 WHEREAS, The passing of George Calhoun will be felt by
27 all who knew and loved him, especially his wife, Scotia Etta
28 Thomas Calhoun; his children, Argie H. Thomas, Don F. Thomas,
29 and Michelle "Mikki" Thomas Young; his sister, Dorothy Opal
30 Calhoun Harvey; his sisters-in-law, Carlee Calhoun and Carrie
31 Mae Thomas; his uncle, Reverend Ephraim Thomas; his nephews,
32 George B. (wife, Essie) Calhoun, Argie H. (wife, Katrina)

11 Harriett E. Blanks, and VeLaura Thomas; his great great
12 nephews, Korey Calhoun, Desmond Calhoun, Christopher Tomlin,
13 Braxton Casey, and Charles Brown, Jr.; his great great
14 nieces, Andrea N. Jarrett, Glenda Day, Clarissa Blanks,
15 Christen Warren, Shannon Brown, Camille Brown, and Carry
16 Gray; his great great great nephews, Cameron, Rasheed,
17 Lamont, Anthony, and Darren; his great great great nieces,
18 Lesly, Carmen, and Paula; and many cousins, other relatives,
19 and special friends; therefore, be it
20 RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SECOND GENERAL
21 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with
22 his many family members and friends, the death of George
23 Raymond Calhoun of East St. Louis, Illinois; and be it
24 further
25 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
26 presented to the family of George Calhoun.
