1 SENATE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate wish to
3 express their sincere condolences to the family and friends
4 of Robert W. Cushing, who passed away on January 14, 2001;
5 and
6 WHEREAS, Robert W. Cushing was a former judge in the Cook
7 County Circuit Court who followed a family tradition in the
8 legal profession; he was born to Margaret and the late F.
9 John Cushing, Jr, also a longtime attorney; and
10 WHEREAS, Mr. Cushing was a 1973 graduate of Loyola
11 Academy in Wilmette; he received his bachelor's degree cum
12 laude in political science and philosophy from Boston College
13 in 1977 and a doctor of law degree in 1980 from Loyola
14 University School of Law in Chicago; and
15 WHEREAS, Mr. Cushing served with the Illinois Attorney
16 General's office in Chicago from 1983 to 1993, first as a
17 trial attorney in the general law division and then, for five
18 years, as chief of the public utilities division; from 1993
19 to 1998 he did commercial litigation and corporate work with
20 Chicago law firms Gardner, Carton and Douglas, and McDermott,
21 Will and Emery; and
22 WHEREAS, Mr. Cushing was appointed by the Illinois
23 Supreme Court, and served as a Circuit Court Judge in 1998;
24 afterward he returned to the firm of Ambrose & Cushing in
25 Chicago where he had begun his career representing plaintiffs
26 in personal injury cases from 1980 through 1983; and
27 WHEREAS, Mr. Cushing served as a board member for Gads
28 Hill Center, an educational support and social service
29 facility in the Pilsen neighborhood of Chicago; he was also a
30 member of an education committee for Marillac House, another
31 Chicago social service center; and

1 WHEREAS, Mr. Cushing was a volunteer immigration advisor
2 for St. Mark Parish in Humboldt Park and an organizer for the
3 annual Misericordia Family Fest in Chicago; he often served
4 as a group leader and moderator for the National Conference
5 of Christians and Jews symposium on the United States
6 Constitution held annually in Chicago; and
7 WHEREAS, The passing of Robert W. Cushing will be deeply
8 felt by all who knew and loved him, especially his wife,
9 Cynthia; his sons, John and David; his daughter, Anna; his
10 mother, Margaret; his sisters, Kathleen Duff, Patricia, Mary
11 Doherty and Margaret Burke; and his brothers, F. John III,
12 Thomas and Joseph; therefore, be it
13 RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SECOND GENERAL
14 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with
15 all who knew him, the death of Robert W. Cushing of Park
16 Ridge, Illinois; and be it further
17 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
18 presented to the family of Robert W. Cushing with our sincere
19 condolences.
