1 HOUSE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, May 27, 2002 will mark the 40th anniversary of
3 memorializing our military and most currently our men and
4 women law enforcement officers and firefighters within the
5 Villages of Schaumburg and Hoffman Estates and the entire
6 State of Illinois; this commemoration founded by, hosted by,
7 chaired by, and emceed by St. Peter Lutheran Church and
8 School in Schaumburg is only as successful as the involvement
9 of its civic military organizations, corporate and local
10 business, both Villages, and most importantly, the residents
11 of our State and specifically those who reside within the
12 boundaries of Schaumburg and Hoffman Estates; and
13 WHEREAS, The roots of this historical commemoration are
14 founded at the footsteps of St. Peter Lutheran Church in
15 Schaumburg through the efforts of its past Senior Pastor,
16 John "Jack" Sternberg; in 1962, Pastor Sternberg began this
17 long-term memorial by having the school children of St. Peter
18 Church and School place flags on the graves of veterans and
19 past schoolteachers; and
20 WHEREAS, This event developed into a long-term memorial
21 day event which included local VFW and American Legion
22 organizations and numerous civic organization such as the
23 Schaumburg/Hoffman Estates Rotary, Schaumburg/Hoffman Estates
24 Jaycees, and Elk Grove Elks led by St. Peter Church; and
25 WHEREAS, This 40th anniversary will include a motorcycle
26 "flag escort" through the Villages of Schaumburg and Hoffman
27 Estates, a passing of the flag from the escort to the
28 Schaumburg Fire Department who will "post colors" for the
29 start of the ceremony at St. Peter, singing of the national
30 anthem and pledge of allegiance, and a special wreath laying
31 with a multi-disciplined honor guard, comprised of the police
32 and fire departments from Schaumburg and Hoffman Estates and

1 local VFW and American Legion personnel; the honor guard will
2 also be comprised of local boy and girl scouts; patriotic
3 music vocal accompaniment and Taps will be performed by all
4 three local high schools, Conant, Hoffman Estates, and
5 Schaumburg, including two trumpet soloists, a marching band,
6 and a vocal group; a military firing squad assisted by the
7 Women's Auxiliary will be responsible for the closing
8 ceremonies; a free old-style picnic follows in the Grove of
9 St. Peter; and
10 WHEREAS, In addition to the above events, the Memorial
11 Day Essay Winners, Mr. Matthew Earl and Ms. Melissa Phillips
12 will read their essays and each will receive a savings bond
13 from Heritage Bank of Schaumburg; this year's essay theme is
14 "What an American Hero Means to Me"; Lt. Rick Kolomay of the
15 Schaumburg Fire Department, who worked diligently alongside
16 his colleagues at the World Trade Center's Ground Zero, will
17 be the Service's Guest Speaker; and
18 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
19 NINETY-SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
20 we congratulate the Villages of Schaumburg and Hoffman
21 Estates and especially St. Peter Lutheran Church and School
22 for their tenured leadership in such a commemoration, which
23 continues to generate a camaraderie and sense of pride
24 amongst all residents within the local area; and be it
25 further
26 RESOLVED, That we thank patriotic citizens such as the
27 Reverend John Sternberg, who had a futuristic vision for
28 ensuring that such a memorial day commemoration would become
29 an institution within the community; and be it further
30 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
31 presented to Reverend John Sternberg of St. Peter Lutheran
32 Church and School and to the Villages of Schaumburg and
