1 HOUSE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3 Representatives are proud to recognize milestone events in
4 the lives of the citizens of the State of Illinois; and
5 WHEREAS, It has come to our attention that Daniel E.
6 Baumann, publisher and deputy chairman of the Daily Herald in
7 Arlington Heights, is retiring after a lifetime of
8 contributions to the profession of journalism and to the
9 success of the Daily Herald; and
10 WHEREAS, After receiving his B.A. in Journalism and M.A.
11 in Political Science from the University of Wisconsin in
12 Madison, Mr. Baumann began his meteoric career as a reporter
13 for Suburban St. Louis and Milwaukee newspapers, as the
14 Washington public representative for Credit Union National
15 Association, and as a teaching assistant at the UW School of
16 Journalism; and
17 WHEREAS, In May, 1964 Paddock Publication had the good
18 fortune to ask Mr. Baumann to join their then-weekly chain of
19 suburban newspapers as a reporter; and
20 WHEREAS, Mr. Baumann quickly progressed to positions of
21 increasing responsibility; city editor, managing editor,
22 executive director, vice president/editor, and senior vice
23 president/general manager; and
24 WHEREAS, In recognition of Mr. Baumann's talent and
25 vision, Paddock Publications named him president of the Daily
26 Herald in 1988, CEO and publisher in 1998, and deputy
27 chairman in 2001; and
28 WHEREAS, The phenomenal growth of the Daily Herald from a
29 weekly Northwest Chicago suburban chain to a prominent,
30 influential regional daily newspaper, that ranks number three
31 in Illinois in circulation, is due in very large part to the

1 leadership of Mr. Baumann; and
2 WHEREAS, Not only is Mr. Baumann an outstanding CEO, but
3 he is also a person of high ethical standards who serves as a
4 mentor to those in the industry who strive to provide balance
5 and fairness in the production of a quality medium; and
6 WHEREAS, Mr. Baumann combined his integrity in his
7 profession with his extensive involvement in community
8 programs while remaining steadfast in his devotion to his
9 wife and children; and
10 WHEREAS, Mr. Baumann has served as an advisor and guide
11 to all those who have had the opportunity and privilege to
12 associate with him and the Daily Herald; his remarkable
13 contributions to the Daily Herald, the community, and to the
14 profession of journalism will be deeply missed; therefore, be
15 it
16 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
17 NINETY-SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
18 we extend our best wishes to Daniel E. Baumann and his wife
19 and family for a happy, healthy and fulfilling future; and be
20 it further
21 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
22 presented to Dan Baumann as an expression of our esteem.
