1 HOUSE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3 Representatives wish to recognize milestone events in the
4 lives of the citizens of the State of Illinois; and
5 WHEREAS, It has come to our attention that Lieutenant
6 Edward J. Zapolsky retired from the Chicago Police Department
7 on February 15, 2002 after more than 31 years of service; and
8 WHEREAS, Mr. Zapolsky served in the United States Army
9 Airborne from June 15, 1966 to August 19, 1969 in Vietnam and
10 achieved the rank of Sergeant E-5; in addition, he was a
11 highly decorated paratrooper receiving the National Defense
12 Service Medal, the Parachute Badge, the Vietnam Service
13 Medal, the Combat Infantryman's Badge, the Vietnam Campaign
14 Medal with Device, and a Meritorious Unit Citation; and
15 WHEREAS, Edward Zapolsky joined the Chicago Police
16 Department on June 15, 1970; during his service he worked as
17 a patrolman in several districts, including the 2nd District,
18 the 8th District, the 9th District, the 21st District, and
19 the 18th District; he also served in the Area One Task Force
20 Unit; he was promoted to Sergeant on December 1, 1988 and
21 assigned to the 21st District; he was promoted to Lieutenant
22 on December 23, 1999 and assigned to the 7th District, where
23 he has worked until his retirement; and
24 WHEREAS, Lieutenant Zapolsky was highly decorated in the
25 Chicago Police Department earning 2 Department Commendations,
26 a Chicago Democratic Convention Ribbon, a Department Life
27 Saving Award, the Police Officer of the Month Award in
28 February 1987, a Unit Citation from Area One Special
29 Operations, 81 Honorable Mentions, 15 Complimentary Letters,
30 2 Appearance Awards, and an Arthur Thompson Award in December
31 2001 for Superior Police Leadership; and

1 WHEREAS, Lieutenant Zapolsky is married to Camilla and is
2 the father of 2 children; he graduated from Linblom High
3 School and attained a Bachelor's Degree and Master's Degree
4 from Lewis University; therefore, be it
5 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
6 NINETY-SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
7 we congratulate Lieutenant Edward J. Zapolsky on his
8 retirement after more than 31 years of dedication and service
9 to the Chicago Police Department; and be it further
10 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
11 presented to Lieutenant Edward J. Zapolsky as an expression
12 of our esteem.
