1 HOUSE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3 Representatives wish to express their sincere condolences to
4 the family and friends of Willie Newsom, who passed away on
5 February 7, 2002; and
6 WHEREAS, Willie Newsom was born on November 28, 1944 in
7 Greenville, Mississippi to James and Lula Newsom; and
8 WHEREAS, Mr. Newsom received his early education at
9 Coleman High School in Greenville, Mississippi; he accepted
10 Christ at an early age at William Chapel Baptist Church in
11 Lamont, Mississippi; he later relocated to Los Angeles,
12 California from Mississippi in 1965; and
13 WHEREAS, "Big Willie" as he was affectionately called by
14 his family and friends, was a singer/song writer and an
15 outstanding entertainer who performed in Las Vegas, numerous
16 clubs in the Los Angeles area, and in many other cities and
17 states; his love for singing the blues was noted and loved by
18 all who knew him; and
19 WHEREAS, Mr. Newsom was a member of many social and
20 charity clubs, including the Pioneer Club, the Pure Pleasure
21 Club, the Market Street Bar & Grill, and the Dynasty Club;
22 and
23 WHEREAS, Mr. Newsom received the "Best Male Blues
24 Vocalist of the Year" Award numerous times throughout his 38
25 years as a blues singer; and
26 WHEREAS, The passing of Willie Newsom will be deeply felt
27 by all who knew and loved him, especially his loving mother,
28 Lula Newsom; his children, Jackie, Colette, Shannae, Tamisha,
29 Alicia, April, Shaquita, Chaviante, and Willie Jr.; his
30 brothers, James Jr., Robert, and Jessie; his sisters, Mary,
31 Pearlie, Dorothy, and Gloria; his grandchildren, Javeon,

1 Traveon, Jaeshon, Delvon, Moesha, Dewanya, and Le'Andre; his
2 special friends, Ray Frank, Danny Woods, and Joe Kincaid; his
3 fiancee, Carolyn Burroughs; his nieces, who include Valeria
4 C. Davis, who is a Legislative Assistant to State
5 Representative Charles G. Morrow, III; his nephews; and his
6 other relatives and many friends; therefore, be it
7 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
8 NINETY-SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
9 we mourn, along with all who knew him, the death of Willie
10 Newsom; and be it further
11 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
12 presented to the family of Willie Newsom with our sincere
13 condolences.
