1 HOUSE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3 Representatives wish to express their sincere condolences to
4 the family and friends of Bertha Maye Seay-Harris, who passed
5 away on October 14, 2001; and
6 WHEREAS, Bertha Mae Seay-Harris was born on October 8,
7 1934 in Mattoon, Illinois; she was a 1951 graduate of
8 Englewood High School; and
9 WHEREAS, Bertha Maye Seay-Harris was employed at Chicago
10 State University in 1979 as a tutor in the Reading Department
11 and later as the Program Assistant with the Child Safety
12 Program in the Psychology Department until her retirement in
13 1999; and
14 WHEREAS, Bertha Maye Seay-Harris was very involved in the
15 lives of her three children; education was extremely
16 important to her and she inspired her children and those
17 around her to strive for excellence; and
18 WHEREAS, As a community leader, Bertha Maye Seay-Harris
19 fought for the construction of Percy L. Julian High School,
20 Medgar Evers Elementary School and the Carter G. Woodson
21 Regional Library and the addition, which included a
22 gymnasium, to the Wacker Elementary School; and
23 WHEREAS, Bertha Maye Seay-Harris was a gifted musician
24 who learned to play the piano at an early age; in addition,
25 she was a great cook and she enjoyed creating beautiful
26 flower and wedding arrangements; and
27 WHEREAS, The passing of Bertha Maye Seay-Harris will be
28 deeply felt by all who knew and loved her, especially her
29 sons, Calvin (wife, Paulette) Harris and Darryl Harris; her
30 daughter, Sherri (husband, Charles) Harris-Morrow; her
31 grandchildren, Nicole, Dawn, Felicia, Sonia, Christopher,

1 Charles IV, Michael, Stephen, Robert, and Eric; her sister,
2 Carol; her step-daughters, Mary Harris and Beverly (husband,
3 Ricardo) Harris-Fleming; her step-son, Albert Jr. (wife,
4 Inez) Harris; her nieces, Marva (husband, Greg) Pearson,
5 Karen Vickers, Eugenia Rollins, and Stephanie Phillips; her
6 nephews, Victor Rollins and Joseph Recca; her
7 great-grandchildren, Blake and Eric Jr.; her special friends,
8 Mary Ann Cook, Elmer J. Atkinson, Dr. Cecil Hale, Attorney.
9 Christopher Watts, Enid Senior, Billy Tolliver, and Marilyn
10 Jones-Johnson; and a host of relatives, friends, neighbors,
11 and others whose lives she touched; therefore, be it
12 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
13 NINETY-SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
14 we mourn, along with all who knew her, the death of Bertha
15 Maye Seay-Harris of Chicago, Illinois; and be it further
16 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
17 presented to the family of Bertha Maye Seay-Harris with our
18 sincere condolences.
