1 HOUSE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, Immigrants have for centuries come to the United
3 States seeking a better life and have contributed to the
4 country through their sweat and toil; and
5 WHEREAS, Immigrants seek only to pursue a better quality
6 of life for themselves and their children through good
7 education, better health care, and more opportunities; and
8 WHEREAS, Immigrants are hard-working, tax-paying
9 contributors to their communities and have helped revitalize
10 decaying urban city areas with new businesses and new
11 housing, contributing to the growth of our economy; and
12 WHEREAS, Immigrant workers contribute in a positive way
13 to our economy, paying billions in taxes each year, yet are
14 often unable to reap the benefits of those taxes paid; and
15 WHEREAS, The ability of immigrant workers to organize has
16 been increasingly threatened by current immigration law and
17 its enforcement, which has been used to retaliate against
18 immigration workers who organize with a union and protest
19 against sweatshop conditions; therefore, be it
20 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
21 NINETY-SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
22 declare June 15 through June 23, 2001 as Immigrant Worker
23 Justice Week to honor the hundreds of thousands of immigrant
24 workers in Illinois; and be it further
25 RESOLVED, That the Illinois House of Representatives
26 supports reform of our Federal immigration laws to allow the
27 many hard working immigrants in Illinois to work towards
28 becoming citizens through a legalization program; and be it
29 further
30 RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be

1 delivered to the President of the United States Senate, the
2 Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, and
3 each member of the Illinois congressional delegation
