1 HOUSE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The institution of marriage is one of the
3 cornerstones upon which our society is built, and a marriage
4 that has achieved a notable longevity is truly a model for
5 the people of the State of Illinois; and
6 WHEREAS, It has come to our attention that Mr. and Mrs.
7 Joseph Acevedo of Chicago, Illinois, will celebrate the
8 fiftieth anniversary of their marriage; and
9 WHEREAS, Joseph Acevedo met Helen Torres in 1947 at the
10 popular "Turner Hall" where a dance was taking place; however
11 it wasn't until 1950 when they started to date regularly; and
12 WHEREAS, As war broke out in Korea in 1951, Joseph was
13 drafted into the United States Army just as a romance between
14 him and Helen blossomed; this turn of events pushed Joseph to
15 make the decision of his life as he asked Helen to marry him;
16 so on September 29, 1951, Joseph Acevedo married Helen
17 Torres; and
18 WHEREAS, Joseph and Helen raised their ten children in
19 the "old neighborhood", now known as the University of
20 Illinois at Chicago; they currently reside at 19th and
21 Leavitt, where they have been since 1963; and
22 WHEREAS, They are the loving parents of Joseph, Roy,
23 Manuel, Felix, Darlene, Roseann, Edward, Deborah, Cynthia,
24 and Martin; the grandparents of 32 wonderful grandchildren;
25 and the great-grandparents of 10 great-grandchildren; and
26 WHEREAS, Joseph and Helen have resided in the Pilsen
27 neighborhood for the past 69 years; they are members of St.
28 Ann's parish; together with others they form the backbone of
29 the parish, helping out at nearly every function, and to this
30 day are among the key fundraisers in ongoing efforts to keep
31 the parish school open; and

1 WHEREAS, The respect for marriage reaches one of its
2 highest plateaus when a couple such as Joseph and Helen
3 Acevedo celebrate their golden wedding anniversary; and
4 WHEREAS, Joseph and Helen Acevedo stand as examples of
5 the best of our society, and their love and devotion to each
6 other and to their family and friends serve as a reminder to
7 all that hard work, dedication, and love can make a
8 difference in today's world; therefore, be it
9 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
10 NINETY-SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
11 we congratulate Joseph and Helen Acevedo on the occasion of
12 their fiftieth wedding anniversary; that we commend them for
13 achieving a long and happy marriage, blessed with children
14 and grandchildren and rich in friendships; and that we wish
15 them happiness and good health in the future; and be it
16 further
17 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
18 presented to them as an expression of our respect and esteem.
