1 HOUSE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3 Representatives are pleased to recognize milestone events in
4 the lives of the citizens of the State of Illinois; and
5 WHEREAS, It has come to our attention that Joseph Conover
6 is retiring from his duties as editor of the Quincy
7 Herald-Whig on April 27, 2001; and
8 WHEREAS, Joseph Conover is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Glenn
9 A. Conover of Quincy, Illinois; and
10 WHEREAS, Mr. Conover is a 1958 graduate of the University
11 of Illinois; he began his career with the Herald-Whig
12 newspaper in 1966 as a copy reader after serving for three
13 years on the staff at the Japan Times in Tokyo following
14 service in the United States Army; in addition he served a
15 year with the United States Information Agency's Voice of
16 America in Washington, D.C. and then returned to the
17 Herald-Whig in 1968 as assistant news editor, being appointed
18 news editor in 1970, associate editor in 1976, and editor in
19 1983; and
20 WHEREAS, Mr. Conover has served as a member in numerous
21 organizations, including the Illinois State Chamber of
22 Commerce, the Quincy Public Library, the Adams County Family
23 Violence Council Steering Committee, the Quincy Symphony
24 Orchestra Association, the United Way of Adams County, the
25 Rotary Club of Quincy, the YMCA, the Saukee Area Council of
26 the Boys Scouts of America, the Civic Music Association, and
27 the Quincy Community Theatre; in addition, he has held
28 memberships in the Mayor's DUI Task Force and the
29 Culver-Stockton College Development Council and was past
30 chairman of the Quincy Advisory Committee to the John Wood
31 Community College Outreach Program; and

1 WHEREAS, Joseph Conover currently is a member of the
2 Quincy Sisters City Commission, serves on the board of the
3 Friends of the Dr. Richard Eells House, is a member of the
4 New Philadelphia Association, the Hannibal Bridge Dedication
5 Steering Committee, the Quincy Area Chamber of Commerce
6 Transportation Committee, and the Quincy Highway Committee,
7 is a trustee of the Quincy Foundation, and is a director of
8 AMPS, Inc.; and
9 WHEREAS, Joseph Conover is supported by his very proud
10 and loving family, who include his wife, Janet, and their two
11 sons, Joseph G. Conover and Robert S. Conover; therefore, be
12 it
13 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
14 NINETY-SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
15 we congratulate Joseph Conover on his retirement as editor of
16 the Quincy Herald-Whig newspaper; and that we wish him well
17 in all of his future endeavors; and be it further
18 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
19 presented to Joseph Conover as an expression of our esteem.
