1 HOUSE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3 Representatives wish to express their sincere condolences to
4 the family and friends of Hazel Dooley Watson, who passed
5 away on March 18, 2001; and
6 WHEREAS, Hazel Dooley Watson was known as the "matriarch
7 of the Republican Party" in Coles County; and
8 WHEREAS, Hazel Dooley Watson was born on May 20, 1906, in
9 Metcalf County, Kentucky, to Frank and Ferbie Walker Dooley;
10 she married the late Dallas V. Watson on June 11, 1924; and
11 WHEREAS, Mrs. Watson held many careers during her
12 lifetime which included selling insurance for State Farm and
13 owning a grocery store and the Chatter Box Restaurant in
14 Charleston, Illinois; she worked for the State of Illinois as
15 Department of Revenue Supervisor of Assessments and as the
16 State Lunch Supervisor for Schools; she was a recipient of an
17 honorary degree from Eastern Illinois University as Doctor of
18 Political Science; and
19 WHEREAS, Hazel Watson was an active fixture in Republican
20 activities around the State for decades; she served as past
21 president of the Illinois Federation of Republican Women and
22 on the National Federation Board, Honorary State Central
23 Committee Woman for the 19th Congressional District; she was
24 a member of the Charleston Women's Club, the Elks Ladies
25 Auxiliary, the Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center Guild, the
26 Charleston Country Club Ladies, and a lifetime member of the
27 Methodist Church; she was also an avid Bridge player; and
28 WHEREAS, The passing of Hazel Dooley Watson will be
29 deeply felt by all who knew and loved her, especially her
30 niece, Mary Jane Biggs; her nephew, Stanley Watson; her
31 several cousins; and her many, many friends in the Republican

1 party; therefore, be it
2 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
3 NINETY-SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
4 we mourn, along with all who knew her, the death of Hazel
5 Dooley Watson of Charleston, Illinois; and be it further
6 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
7 presented to the family of Hazel Dooley Watson with our
8 sincere condolences.
