1 HOUSE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3 Representatives wish to express their sincere condolences to
4 the family and friends of Santos Pinero, who passed away on
5 February 3, 2001; and
6 WHEREAS, A native of Puerto Rico, Mr. Pinero came to be
7 known as a sort of missionary to the United States; when a
8 Spanish-speaking immigrant moved to Chicago, often one of the
9 first people they would meet was Santos Pinero; and
10 WHEREAS, Santos Pinero and his wife, Manuela "Nellie"
11 Pinero, moved to the Near West Side of Chicago area from
12 Puerto Rico in 1949; for 40 years, Mr. Pinero did warehouse
13 and manufacturing work each day while devoting his evenings
14 to church and community groups; and
15 WHEREAS, While raising his four children, Mr. Pinero
16 turned to the Methodist Church; he moved his family back to
17 Puerto Rico during the social upheaval in Chicago in 1968;
18 they returned to Chicago the next year with Mr. Pinero's firm
19 conviction that his family's life should be framed by
20 church's activities; and
21 WHEREAS, Mr. Pinero's association with the church grew as
22 he found more ways to help others; he counseled grieving
23 families, made home visits to new families in his church, and
24 coordinated church social activities; although he was a
25 layman, he sometimes conducted home church services; and
26 WHEREAS, Mr. Pinero helped establish Casa Central, a
27 Spanish-language social service agency that helps immigrants
28 settle down in the Chicago area; and
29 WHEREAS, Santos Pinero retired in 1988 and moved back to
30 Puerto Rico only to return to Chicago in 2000 to be closer to
31 his family; he led daily religious devotions for the

1 senior-care program run by Casa Central; and
2 WHEREAS, The passing of Santos Pinero will be deeply felt
3 by all who knew and loved him, especially his children, Vilma
4 Rosario, Robert Pinero, Nellie Pini, and Gladys Saint; his 12
5 grandchildren; and his 5 great-grandchildren; therefore be it
6 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
7 NINETY-SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
8 we mourn, along with all who knew him, the death of Santos
9 Pinero of Chicago, Illinois; and be it further
10 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
11 presented to the family of Santos Pinero with our sincere
12 condolences.
