1 AN ACT concerning education.
2 Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
3 represented in the General Assembly:
4 Section 5. The School Code is amended by changing
5 Section 27-3 and adding Section 27-3.5 as follows:
6 (105 ILCS 5/27-3) (from Ch. 122, par. 27-3)
7 Sec. 27-3. Patriotism and Principles of representative
8 government; - Proper use of flag - method of voting - Pledge
9 of Allegiance. American patriotism and The principles of
10 representative government, as enunciated in the American
11 Declaration of Independence, the Constitution of the United
12 States of America, and the Constitution of the State of
13 Illinois, and the proper use and display of the American
14 flag, shall be taught in all public schools and other
15 educational institutions supported or maintained in whole or
16 in part by public funds. No student shall receive a
17 certificate of graduation without passing a satisfactory
18 examination upon this subject such subjects.
19 Instruction shall be given in all such schools and
20 institutions in the method of voting at elections by means of
21 the Australian Ballot system and the method of the counting
22 of votes for candidates.
23 The Pledge of Allegiance shall be recited each school day
24 by pupils in elementary educational institutions supported or
25 maintained in whole or in part by public funds.

29 (a) American patriotism and the proper use and display
30 of, proper etiquette for, and proper ways of rendering honor

1 to the United States national flag shall be taught in all
2 public schools and other educational institutions supported
3 or maintained in whole or in part by public funds. The State
4 Board of Education shall devise or approve the curriculum.
5 No student shall receive a certificate of graduation without
6 passing a satisfactory examination upon these subjects.
7 (b) The Pledge of Allegiance shall be recited each
8 school day by pupils in elementary educational institutions
9 supported or maintained in whole or in part by public funds.
