1 SENATE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate wish to
3 express their sincere condolences to the family and friends
4 of Kanella Chiames Canakis, who recently passed away; and
5 WHEREAS, Kanella Chiames Canakis was born in Kalavryta,
6 Greece; she came to the United States in the early 1950s, and
7 has been a resident of Waukegan since 1968; and
8 WHEREAS, Her story is one of courage and survival in the
9 face of danger; Mrs. Canakis lost her husband, Andreas
10 Panagiotakopoulos, when German occupation forces executed the
11 male population of her town in 1943; Mrs. Canakis was
12 instrumental in rallying the surviving widows and orphans in
13 overcoming the tragic loss of the community; she became the
14 first president of the town and worked to obtain emergency
15 aid and assistance to rebuild from the destruction of war;
16 she worked to give women the right to vote, and continued to
17 work with her community until her migration to the United
18 States; and
19 WHEREAS, Kanella Chiames Canakis is survived by her two
20 children, Dr. Nikos Panacos and Coula Dracos; her son-in-law,
21 Dr. William Dracos; her granddaughters, Ms. Ioanna (Richard)
22 Parrillo, Jr. and Ms. Jorgette Dracos; her great-grandson,
23 Richard Parrillo, III; and her nieces, nephews, cousins both
24 in the United States and in Greece; therefore, be it
25 RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-FIRST GENERAL
26 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we again extend our
27 sympathy to the family and friends of Kanella Chiames
28 Canakis; and be it further
29 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
30 presented to the family of Kanella Chiames Canakis.
