1 SENATE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, Helen J. Dobson was born in Nisula, Michigan, an
3 Upper Peninsula farming community, on April 12, 1916; her
4 parents emigrated from Finland and instilled the Finnish
5 'sisu' ( a combination of strong backbone, spunk, stamina,
6 guts, drive, and perseverance) in each of their children; and
7 WHEREAS, Helen J. Dobson graduated from Houghton High
8 School in Houghton, Michigan, and received a Bachelor of
9 Science Teaching degree from Northern State Teachers College
10 (now Northern Michigan University) in Marquette, Michigan;
11 and
12 WHEREAS, During World War II, Helen J. Dobson was a
13 defense worker making ammunition shells in Milwaukee; she was
14 proud to have been an American Airlines sales agent in Akron,
15 Ohio and at the old Chicago Conrad Hilton Hotel; she was an
16 elementary school teacher in Michigan and in DuPage County;
17 and
18 WHEREAS, In 1949, Helen J. Dobson married Laurence and
19 moved to Villa Park where they lived for 46 years; for the
20 last few years, they have lived in a Naperville retirement
21 community; in June 1999, they celebrated their 50th wedding
22 anniversary and took a well deserved trip to Alaska; and
23 WHEREAS, Helen J. Dobson always thought of others before
24 thinking of herself; she dedicated her time to helping senior
25 citizens and their causes; Helen was a volunteer for the
26 DuPage Senior Citizen Council, a member of the Senior for
27 Seniors Club, and dedicated numerous hours working at a
28 senior center resale shop; she also volunteered her time to
29 campaign for various political candidates at all government
30 levels; she was always available to work at the phone banks,
31 sell tickets, fold and mail literature, work at fundraisers,
32 and would do whatever it took to "get out the vote"; she was

1 an active supporter for State Senators Chris Lauzen and Dan
2 Cronin; and
3 WHEREAS, Helen J. Dobson's passing will be deeply felt by
4 her family and friends, especially her husband, Laurence; her
5 daughter, Debra D. Jones, son-in-law, P. Steve Jones; her
6 sister-in-law, Ada Miller; and numerous nieces and nephews;
7 she was preceded in death by her two brothers and three
8 sisters; therefore, be it
9 RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-FIRST GENERAL
10 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with
11 all that knew and loved her, the death of Helen J. Dobson;
12 and be it further
13 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
14 presented to the family of Helen J. Dobson.
