1 SENATE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The members of the Senate were saddened to learn
3 of the death of Edward T. Hanley of Wadsworth, one of the
4 country's most influential labor leaders, on January 7, 2000
5 in a car accident; and
6 WHEREAS, Mr. Hanley, the son of a tavern owner, was born
7 on Chicago's West Side; he rose quickly from bartender to
8 young union leader, playing a key role in national politics
9 and the labor movement; he was one of the few to remain at
10 the helm through labor's struggles in the 1980s and 1990s;
11 and
12 WHEREAS, Mr. Hanley served as president of the 250,000
13 member Hotel Employees and Restaurant Employees International
14 Union for more than twenty-five years; and
15 WHEREAS, Mr. Hanley is credited as one of the first union
16 leaders with the foresight to establish an organizing program
17 that helped win battles for workers and kept the union afloat
18 during difficult times; and
19 WHEREAS, His passing will be deeply felt by his family
20 and friends, especially his wife, Kathryn; his sons, Edward
21 T., Jr. and Thomas W.; his sisters, Delores Calabrese and
22 June Hansen; and his four grandchildren; therefore, be it
23 RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-FIRST GENERAL
24 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we note with sorrow
25 and regret the death of Edward T. Hanley, Sr. and extend our
26 sincere condolences to his family and friends; and be it
27 further
28 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
29 presented to his widow, Kathryn Hanley.
