1 SENATE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened
3 to learn of the death of Floyd W. Horton of Antioch,
4 Illinois; Mr. Horton was 106 years old and a veteran of World
5 War I; and
6 WHEREAS, Floyd Horton was born on November 7, 1892, on
7 the family farm in Avon Township; his parents were Joseph M.
8 and Jenny M. (Richardson) Horton; and
9 WHEREAS, Floyd Horton was drafted into the United States
10 Army in 1917, serving with the 131st Infantry, Company C;
11 Floyd Horton was in combat during the Meuse River-Argonne
12 Offensive in France in 1918; he received a Purple Heart for
13 injuries he received when an exploding bullet shattered his
14 right elbow; in 1998, Mr. Horton received the Legion of
15 Honor, France's highest military honor, for his service in
16 France during the World War I; Mr. Horton was also honored
17 for being the oldest living American veteran who had served
18 in France; and
19 WHEREAS, In 1923 he married Clare Drom in Antioch; at the
20 beginning of their life together, Mr. Horton farmed; he later
21 served as the bookkeeper for Antioch Lumber; together with
22 his wife, Mr. Horton built wooden boats, which his wife would
23 then paint; in 1998 Mr. and Mrs. Horton celebrated 75 years
24 of marriage; and
25 WHEREAS, Floyd Horton was a member of V.F.W. Post #4551
26 and the American Legion Post #748, both located in Antioch;
27 for 60 years he and his wife would place American flags on
28 the graves of veterans in local cemeteries; Mr. Horton was a
29 fisherman who loved to teach his nieces and nephews the finer
30 points of the sport; and
31 WHEREAS, Floyd Horton is survived by his wife, Clare, and

1 many nieces and nephews; therefore, be it
2 RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-FIRST GENERAL
3 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with
4 his family and friends, the death of Floyd Horton of Antioch,
5 Illinois; may the heroism and life of this great man be
6 remembered by all that knew him; and be it further
7 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
8 presented to Clare Horton.
