1 SENATE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened
3 to learn of the death of former State Representative Walter
4 Reum, who recently passed away; and
5 WHEREAS, Walter Reum was a poet, playwright, lawyer, and
6 an artist; as a child he sang on a children's radio show, and
7 in high school he won an essay-writing contest based on a
8 story told by a dish that survived the Chicago fire; his
9 prize for winning the contest was a visit with poet Carl
10 Sandburg; and
11 WHEREAS, Mr. Reum went on to become a founding partner in
12 Reum and Casello, a law firm on LaSalle Street in Chicago; he
13 first began as a prosecutor in Oak Park, and then became a
14 State Representative in 1952; while working as a
15 Representative he pushed to provide special education
16 facilities for both gifted and handicapped children; during
17 his term of office he received an outstanding rating from the
18 Better Government Association; and
19 WHEREAS, Mr. Reum went on to become an expert on the
20 Employee Retirement Income Security Act and pension law; he
21 used his experience to aid him as a management attorney for
22 the Midwest Operating Engineers Local 150; and
23 WHEREAS, Mr. Reum co-authored the book "Politics from the
24 Inside Up"; he co-wrote and co-produced the musical comedy
25 "Life of the Party", which entertained guests at a political
26 fundraiser; after his retirement he continued to write
27 poetry; and
28 WHEREAS, Walter Reum is survived by his wife, Lucy; his
29 sons, James and Robert; and four grandchildren; therefore, be
30 it
31 RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-FIRST GENERAL

1 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with
2 his family and friends, the death of former State
3 Representative Walter Reum; may they find comfort in this
4 time of need; and be it further
5 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
6 presented to the family of Walter Reum.
