1 HOUSE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, There are an estimated three million students
3 with learning disabilities and over 59,000 students in the
4 United States with visual impairments that preclude them from
5 using standard textbooks effectively; and
6 WHEREAS, Students with print disabilities like blindness
7 or dyslexia can benefit greatly from technologies that help
8 them learn and achieve their most ambitious goals for
9 academic and professional achievement; and
10 WHEREAS, Recording for the Blind and Dyslexic, the
11 nation's educational library for people with print
12 disabilities, provides taped and computerized textbooks in
13 every subject and grade level; and
14 WHEREAS, These books are read and recorded by more than
15 5,000 volunteers, including 500 here in Illinois; and
16 WHEREAS, More than 300 students in Illinois already
17 benefit from the use of RFB&D's taped and computerized
18 textbooks; and
19 WHEREAS, Recording for the Blind and Dyslexic will hold
20 its annual Record-a-Thon during the week of April 9-15, 2000,
21 at studios in the Chicagoland area as part of the national
22 effort to record more than 200 books onto audiotape for
23 RFB&D's 76,000 members across the United States; therefore,
24 be it
25 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
26 NINETY-FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
27 we declare Record-a-Thon week in Illinois for April 9-15,
28 2000, and urge all citizens to take part in activities
29 designed to increase awareness and understanding of learning
30 disabilities as a national challenge; and be it further

2 presented to Recording for the Blind and Dyslexic.
