1 HOUSE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The members of this Body are happy to recognize
3 individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the
4 well-being of the citizens of this State; and
5 WHEREAS, Mayor John Oremus, mayor of Bridgeview, is one
6 of these individuals; and
7 WHEREAS, He was born in Chicago on December 29, 1913; as
8 a sophomore in high school, to help support his family, he
9 worked on a natural gas pipeline from Oklahoma to Chicago;
10 and
11 WHEREAS, He later bought a gas station and with one
12 truck, he began hauling stone from the McCook Quarry and coal
13 from a strip mine outside of Joliet; and
14 WHEREAS, In the mid-1940s, he purchased 16 acres of
15 property in the 7600 block of West 79th Street, where he
16 founded Prairie Material Sales Inc.; from a staff of two, Mr.
17 Oremus built the business into a multimillion dollar
18 operation that now employs 2,000 people; and
19 WHEREAS, Mr. Oremus entered politics in 1953, serving 2
20 years as chairman of the village's zoning board of appeals
21 before making his first successful run for mayor in 1955; and
22 WHEREAS, He has held the post of Bridgeview's mayor for
23 40 of the past 44 years; and
24 WHEREAS, John Oremus was a strong leader in the community
25 and south suburbs for the past 4 decades; and
26 WHEREAS, John Oremus is now stepping down as mayor of
27 Bridgeview; therefore, be it
28 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
29 NINETY-FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that

1 we congratulate John Oremus as he retires as mayor of
2 Bridgeview and we extend to him our best wishes for the
3 future; and be it further
4 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
5 presented to him as an expression of our esteem.
