1 AN ACT to amend the Counties Code by changing Section
2 4-6002.
3 Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
4 represented in the General Assembly:
5 Section 5. The Counties Code is amended by changing
6 Section 4-6002 as follows:
7 (55 ILCS 5/4-6002) (from Ch. 34, par. 4-6002)
8 Sec. 4-6002. Coroners in counties of less than 2,000,000.
9 (a) The County Board, in all counties of less than 2,000,000
10 inhabitants, shall fix the compensation of Coroners within
11 the limitations fixed by this Division, and shall appropriate
12 for their necessary clerk hire, stationery, fuel, supplies,
13 and other expenses. The compensation of the Coroner shall be
14 fixed separately from his necessary clerk hire, stationery,
15 fuel and other expenses, and such compensation shall be fixed
16 within the following limits:
17 To each Coroner in counties containing less than 5,000
18 inhabitants, not less than $4,500 per annum.
19 To each Coroner in counties containing 5,000 or more
20 inhabitants but less than 14,000 inhabitants, not less than
21 $6,000 per annum.
22 To each Coroner in counties containing 14,000 or more
23 inhabitants, but less than 30,000 inhabitants, not less than
24 $9,000 per annum.
25 To each Coroner in counties containing 30,000 or more
26 inhabitants, but less than 60,000 inhabitants, not less than
27 $14,000 per annum.
28 To each Coroner in counties containing 60,000 or more
29 inhabitants, but less than 100,000 inhabitants, not less than
30 $15,000 per annum.
31 To each Coroner in counties containing 100,000 or more

1 inhabitants, but less than 200,000 inhabitants, not less than
2 $16,500 per annum.
3 To each Coroner in counties containing 200,000 or more
4 inhabitants, but less than 300,000 inhabitants, not less than
5 $18,000 per annum.
6 To each Coroner in counties containing 300,000 or more
7 inhabitants, but less than 2,000,000 inhabitants, not less
8 than $20,000 per annum.
9 The population of all counties for the purpose of fixing
10 compensation, as herein provided, shall be based upon the
11 last Federal census immediately previous to the election of
12 the Coroner in question in each county. This Section does not
13 apply to a county which has abolished the elective office of
14 coroner.
15 (b) Those coroners beginning a term of office on or
16 after December 1, 1990 shall be compensated as follows:
17 (1) Beginning December 1, 1990, base salary plus at
18 least 3% of base salary.
19 (2) Beginning December 1, 1991, base salary plus at
20 least 6% of base salary.
21 (3) Beginning December 1, 1992, base salary plus at
22 least 9% of base salary.
23 (4) Beginning December 1, 1993, base salary plus at
24 least 12% of base salary.
25 "Base salary", as used in this subsection (b), means the
26 salary in effect before July 1, 1989.
27 (c) Those coroners beginning a term of office on or
28 after December 1, 2000 shall be compensated as follows:
29 (1) In counties with a population less than 5,000,
30 $9,000 per year.
31 (2) In counties with a population of 5,000 or more
32 but less than 14,000, $15,000 per year.
33 (3) In counties with a population of 14,000 or more
34 but less than 30,000, $15,000 per year.

1 (4) In counties with a population of 30,000 or more
2 but less than 60,000, $45,000 per year.
3 (5) In counties with a population of 60,000 or more
4 but less than 100,000, $60,000 per year.
5 (6) In counties with a population of 100,000 or
6 more but less than 200,000, $75,000 per year.
7 (7) In counties with a population of 200,000 or
8 more but less than 300,000, $97,500 per year.
9 (8) In counties with a population of 300,000 or
10 more, $112,500 per year.
11 The State shall furnish 2/3 of the increase in the annual
12 compensation over the amounts in subsection (b). The amounts
13 furnished by the State shall be payable monthly from the
14 State treasury to the county.
15 Each county shall furnish 1/3 of the increase in the
16 annual compensation over the amounts in subsection (b).
