1 HOUSE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, Centralia, Illinois honors many of its citizens
3 with induction into the Centralia Hall of Fame; one inductee
4 was the late Verne E. Joy, editor and publisher of the
5 Evening Sentinel, a Centralia newspaper; and
6 WHEREAS, Verne E. Joy was born December 12, 1876; his
7 father and uncle published the Carmi Times, a small weekly
8 newspaper; unable to finish high school due to an undisclosed
9 illness, fate played a part in young Verne Joy's life; at the
10 age of 21, he was appointed by then President McKinley to
11 serve as consular agent in Germany; he served in Germany and
12 then moved to Thuringia, where he opened a consular office;
13 in 1899 he returned to Centralia to marry Ella M. Brewster;
14 they spent their honeymoon on the Rhine in Germany; and
15 WHEREAS, After spending several years abroad, and also at
16 several different jobs throughout the United States, Verne
17 Joy returned to Centralia to take over the Sentinel; his
18 daughter, Mrs. S. Alden Perrine, as well as two grandsons,
19 took over his hard work on the newspaper after his death;
20 therefore, be it
21 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
22 NINETIETH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
23 salute the late Verne E. Joy, longtime editor and publisher
24 of the Sentinel, on his induction into the Centralia Hall of
25 Fame; and be it further
26 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
27 presented to the family of Verne Joy.
