| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to |
| 3 | | learn of the death of Jeremiah David Sullivan of Urbana, who |
| 4 | | passed away on July 7, 2016; and
|
| 5 | | WHEREAS, Jeremiah Sullivan was born on November 15, 1938 in |
| 6 | | Norwood, Massachusetts; his parents were Jeremiah F. Sullivan |
| 7 | | and Doris Nutton Sullivan; and
|
| 8 | | WHEREAS, After receiving his bachelor's degree in physics |
| 9 | | as an Alfred P. Sloan Scholar in 1960 from Carnegie Institute |
| 10 | | of Technology (now Carnegie Mellon University), Jeremiah |
| 11 | | Sullivan earned his Ph.D. in physics from Princeton University |
| 12 | | in 1964; he spent his postdoctoral years as a research |
| 13 | | associate in the theoretical physics group at the Stanford |
| 14 | | Linear Accelerator Center; and
|
| 15 | | WHEREAS, In 1967, Jeremiah Sullivan joined the Physics |
| 16 | | Department at the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana as |
| 17 | | an associate professor; he became a professor in 1973; he |
| 18 | | retired from the University of Illinois in July of 2006 as the |
| 19 | | head of the Department of Physics, a position he held for six |
| 20 | | years; and
|
| 21 | | WHEREAS, In 1974, Jeremiah Sullivan began what ultimately |
|

| 1 | | developed into his major research direction when he accepted an |
| 2 | | invitation to become a member of JASON, a group of scientists |
| 3 | | who provide expert technical analyses to the United States |
| 4 | | government on scientific issues relevant to national security; |
| 5 | | each summer, until 2011, he spent six weeks working with the |
| 6 | | JASON group and contributed greatly to its success; he also |
| 7 | | lent his expertise to a number of other important studies and |
| 8 | | reviews that have played key roles in the evolution of United |
| 9 | | States defense policy over the past 20 years; and
|
| 10 | | WHEREAS, Jeremiah Sullivan made significant contributions |
| 11 | | to particle physics in the early years of his career; he was a |
| 12 | | member of numerous influential committees, including the |
| 13 | | United States Department of Energy's High Energy Physics |
| 14 | | Advisory Panel, the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory Particle Data |
| 15 | | Group Advisory Panel; the Advisory Committee of the National |
| 16 | | Nuclear Security Administration, the Board of Directors of the |
| 17 | | Arms Control Association, the Distinguished External Advisory |
| 18 | | Committee on Arms Control and National Security of Sandia |
| 19 | | National Laboratories, the External Review Committee of the |
| 20 | | Non-Proliferation, Arms Control, and International Security |
| 21 | | Directorate of Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, and the |
| 22 | | Review Committee of the National Security Directorate of |
| 23 | | Pacific Northwest National Laboratory; he was also the acting |
| 24 | | head of the Theoretical Physics Division at the Fermi National |
| 25 | | Accelerator Laboratory in 1972; and

| 1 | | WHEREAS, In 2001, Jeremiah Sullivan was appointed to a |
| 2 | | four-year term as the United States representative to the Panel |
| 3 | | on Security-Related Civil Science and Technology, a |
| 4 | | subcommittee of the NATO Science Committee; he served on the |
| 5 | | Committee on International Security and Arms Control of the |
| 6 | | American Academy of Arts and Sciences from 1988 to 2002 and on |
| 7 | | the Committee on International Security and Arms Control of the |
| 8 | | National Academy of Sciences from 1980 to 1983; and
|
| 9 | | WHEREAS, Jeremiah Sullivan was elected as a Fellow of the |
| 10 | | American Physical Society and the American Association for the |
| 11 | | Advancement of Science; he received an Alfred P. Sloan |
| 12 | | Foundation fellowship in 1968; he was also recognized by the |
| 13 | | American Physical Society with the 2000 Leo Szilard Award; and
|
| 14 | | WHEREAS, Jeremiah Sullivan loved sailing in the Pacific |
| 15 | | waters off San Diego and was delighted to be co-captain of a |
| 16 | | six-person sailboat for two weeks with his friends in Tahiti |
| 17 | | and Bora Bora in 2001; he enjoyed building furniture and wooden |
| 18 | | toys for his children and was handy in fixing anything that |
| 19 | | broke; he enjoyed art and was good at framing pictures for his |
| 20 | | home and for gifts; he enjoyed music, his garden, spending time |
| 21 | | in nature, and traveling with his wife throughout the United |
| 22 | | States and abroad; he also enjoyed reading about history, |
| 23 | | current events, and science of many kinds, and playing with his |
|

| 1 | | children, his granddaughter, and his cats; and
|
| 2 | | WHEREAS, Jeremiah Sullivan was preceded in death by his |
| 3 | | parents; his sisters, Doris Ann Bradbury and Mary Ellen Hanley; |
| 4 | | and his brother, David Hall Sullivan; and |
| 5 | | WHEREAS, Jeremiah Sullivan is survived by his loving wife |
| 6 | | of 54 years, Sheila Sullivan; his children, Maureen E. Sullivan |
| 7 | | and Jeremiah J. (Jennifer) Sullivan; his granddaughter, Lily S. |
| 8 | | Sullivan; and his nieces and nephews, Captain Timothy R. |
| 9 | | (Marie) Hanley, United States Navy (Ret.), Mary K. Hanley (Ken |
| 10 | | Scheffler), David L. (Carla) Bradbury, Karole L. Bradbury, and |
| 11 | | Steven E. Bradbury; therefore, be it
|
| 12 | | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-NINTH GENERAL |
| 13 | | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we, along with his |
| 14 | | family and friends, mourn the passing of Jeremiah David |
| 15 | | Sullivan; and be it further
|
| 16 | | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be |
| 17 | | presented to the family of Jeremiah Sullivan as an expression |
| 18 | | of our sympathy.
