| 3 | | before the beginning of recorded history, and they continue to |
| 4 | | serve a vital role today; and

| 5 | | WHEREAS, Combat infantrymen have served the United States |
| 6 | | in numerous wars since the 1700s; and

| 7 | | WHEREAS, The infantryman is the basic combat soldier and |
| 8 | | the backbone of the United States Army; and
|
| 9 | | WHEREAS, There have been numerous special types of infantry |
| 10 | | units whose organizations and equipment differ from regular |
| 11 | | infantry divisions, such as parachute and glider infantry, |
| 12 | | mountain infantry, and armored infantry; and

| 13 | | WHEREAS, During basic training for the military, men and |
| 14 | | women learn the job of an infantryman in a squad to better |
| 15 | | protect their lives and the lives of many others; the |
| 16 | | infantryman must endure long periods of exposure to weather, |
| 17 | | eat his food cold, go long periods without sleeping or bathing, |
| 18 | | and may fight for months, unharmed, while his comrades are |
