| 2 | | WHEREAS, Someone develops Alzheimer's disease every 66 |
| 3 | | seconds; and
|
| 4 | | WHEREAS, Alzheimer's disease is on the rise with 5.4 |
| 5 | | million Americans currently living with the disease and an |
| 6 | | estimated 16 million Americans projected to be diagnosed with |
| 7 | | the disease by 2050; and
|
| 8 | | WHEREAS, Currently, 220,000 people in Illinois live with |
| 9 | | the disease; there will be 260,000 in just nine years; and
|
| 10 | | WHEREAS, Alzheimer's disease will cost Illinois $1.53 |
| 11 | | billion in Medicaid funding in 2016; and
|
| 12 | | WHEREAS, Alzheimer's disease is the sixth leading cause of |
| 13 | | death, more than breast
and prostate cancer combined, and an |
| 14 | | unrelenting, progressive condition that destroys brain cells; |
| 15 | | currently, no cure or even a way to slow the progression of the |
| 16 | | disease exists; Alzheimer's places significant financial |
| 17 | | burdens on families and businesses, with businesses losing |
| 18 | | billions a year in lost productivity and replacement expenses |
| 19 | | for employees who miss work or quit to care for a relative; and
|
| 20 | | WHEREAS, In Illinois in 2015, there were 590,000 Illinois |
|

| 1 | | family members and friends who provided over 671 million hours |
| 2 | | of unpaid care, valued at $8.22 billion, to their loved ones |
| 3 | | with Alzheimer's and other dementia; and
|
| 4 | | WHEREAS, The impact of Alzheimer's and other dementia on |
| 5 | | Illinois families, the health care system, and society as a |
| 6 | | whole is of great importance; the need for home and |
| 7 | | community-based services for those with Alzheimer's is on the |
| 8 | | rise and caregiver stress is at an all-time high; and
|
| 9 | | WHEREAS, Alzheimer's disease is a looming public health |
| 10 | | crisis and we call upon all policy makers to join in the |
| 11 | | efforts to raise awareness and to serve the hundreds of |
| 12 | | thousands of persons with Alzheimer's and other dementia in |
| 13 | | Illinois, their families, and caregivers; and
|
| 14 | | WHEREAS, On April 14, 2016, Alzheimer's advocates will |
| 15 | | speak up for the needs and rights of people with Alzheimer's |
| 16 | | and their families and ask the Illinois legislature to make |
| 17 | | Alzheimer's disease a priority public health issue in the State |
| 18 | | of Illinois; therefore, be it
|
| 19 | | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE |
| 20 | | NINETY-NINTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we |
| 21 | | proclaim April 14, 2016 as the Annual Alzheimer's Association |
| 22 | | Advocacy Day in the State of Illinois.
