| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of |
| 3 | | Representatives wish to recognize the Canaan A.M.W. Church in |
| 4 | | Maywood on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of its |
| 5 | | founding; and
|
| 6 | | WHEREAS, On March 20, 1905, the Canaan A.M.E. Mission |
| 7 | | Church was organized in Oak Park under the leadership of Rev. |
| 8 | | Thomas Pain Devlin; the first chartered members were Brother |
| 9 | | and Sister
Shannon; Sister Heady and Brother James Devlin; |
| 10 | | Brother Tom Hensely; Sister Fannie Lee; Sister
Genevieve and |
| 11 | | Brother Winford Wilson; Sister Janie Wilson; Sister Colvin; |
| 12 | | Sister Mary Wilson Dobbs; and
Sister Fannie Stuart; and

| 13 | | WHEREAS, In 1910, the A.M.E. Mission church was organized |
| 14 | | in Maywood under the leadership of Rev. Thomas Lovett; the |
| 15 | | first chartered members were Sister Elizabeth and Brother |
| 16 | | William
Priestly; Sister Maude Priestly Stump; Sister Mary |
| 17 | | Sheridan; Brother A.L. Rayford; Sister Fannie D.
Stuart; Sister |
| 18 | | Florence May and Brother Joseph Logan; and Sister Fannie Lee; |
| 19 | | and
|
| 20 | | WHEREAS, The 2 churches consolidated their respective |
| 21 | | congregations in 1914 and chose the name Canaan A.M.E. Church; |

| 1 | | WHEREAS, The first choir was organized in 1912 and the |
| 2 | | first parsonage was built in 1923; the sanctuary was erected in |
| 3 | | 1925; and

| 4 | | WHEREAS, The church expanded numerous times throughout the |
| 5 | | years due to significant increases in membership; and
|
| 6 | | WHEREAS, Other pastors to serve the church throughout the |
| 7 | | years were Rev. James Woods, Rev. W.B. Lowery, Rev. W.H. |
| 8 | | Thomasson, Rev. T.J. Merritt, Rev. D.H. Byrd, Rev. G.I. Holt, |
| 9 | | Rev. W.B. Barber, Rev. S.E. Malone, Rev. S.B. Washington, Rev. |
| 10 | | J.C. Brewer, Rev. Maurice Higginbothan, Rev. J.W. James, Rev. |
| 11 | | Granville Reed, Rev. J. Edward Foster, Rev. W.N. Reed, Rev. |
| 12 | | Charles I. Spivey, Rev. Fred D. Ford, Rev. Blaine Ramsey, Rev. |
| 13 | | Isaac Kindred, and Rev. Robert L. Bailey; and

| 14 | | WHEREAS, The current pastor, Rev. C. Calvin Rice, joined |
| 15 | | the church in time to see it through its 100th anniversary and |
| 16 | | into the future; therefore, be it
|
| 17 | | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE |
| 18 | | NINETY-NINTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we |
| 19 | | recognize the 100th anniversary of the Canaan A.M.W. Church, |
| 20 | | and we wish it many more successful years; and be it further
