| 5 | | "Section 5. The School Code is amended by changing Section |
| 6 | | 27-22 as follows: |
| 7 | | (105 ILCS 5/27-22) (from Ch. 122, par. 27-22)
|
| 8 | | Sec. 27-22. Required high school courses.
|
| 9 | | (a) As a prerequisite to receiving
a high school diploma, |
| 10 | | each pupil entering the 9th grade in the 1984-1985 school year |
| 11 | | through the 2004-2005 school year must, in addition to
other |
| 12 | | course requirements,
successfully complete the following |
| 13 | | courses:
|
| 14 | | (1) three years of language arts;
|
| 15 | | (2) two years of mathematics, one of which may be |
| 16 | | related to
computer
technology;

| 1 | | (3) one year of science;
|
| 2 | | (4) two years of social studies, of which at least one |
| 3 | | year
must be history
of the United States or a combination |

| 6 | | (5) One year chosen from (A) music, (B) art, (C) |
| 7 | | foreign
language,
which shall be deemed to include American |
| 8 | | Sign Language or (D)
vocational education.
|
| 9 | | (b) As a prerequisite to receiving a high school diploma, |
| 10 | | each pupil
entering the 9th grade in the 2005-2006 school year |
| 11 | | must, in addition to other course requirements, successfully
|
| 12 | | complete all of the following courses: |
| 13 | | (1) Three years of language arts. |
| 14 | | (2) Three years of mathematics. |
| 15 | | (3) One year of science. |
| 16 | | (4) Two years of social studies, of which at least one |
| 17 | | year must be history of the United States or a combination |
| 18 | | of history of the United States and American government. |
| 19 | | (5) One year chosen from (A) music, (B) art, (C) |
| 20 | | foreign language, which shall be deemed to include American |
| 21 | | Sign Language, or (D) vocational education. |
| 22 | | (c) As a prerequisite to receiving a high school diploma, |
| 23 | | each pupil
entering the 9th grade in the 2006-2007 school year |
| 24 | | must, in addition to other course requirements, successfully
|
| 25 | | complete all of the following courses: |
| 26 | | (1) Three years of language arts. |

| 3 | | or any other subject. When applicable, writing-intensive |
| 4 | | courses may be counted towards the fulfillment of other |
| 5 | | graduation requirements.

| 6 | | (3) Three years of mathematics, one of which must be |
| 7 | | Algebra I and one of which must include geometry content. |
| 8 | | (4) One year of science. |
| 9 | | (5) Two years of social studies, of which at least one |
| 10 | | year must be history of the United States or a combination |
| 11 | | of history of the United States and American government. |
| 12 | | (6) One year chosen from (A) music, (B) art, (C) |
| 13 | | foreign language, which shall be deemed to include American |
| 14 | | Sign Language, or (D) vocational education. |
| 15 | | (d) As a prerequisite to receiving a high school diploma, |
| 16 | | each pupil
entering the 9th grade in the 2007-2008 school year |
| 17 | | must, in addition to other course requirements, successfully

| 18 | | complete all of the following courses: |
| 19 | | (1) Three years of language arts. |
| 20 | | (2) Two years of writing intensive courses, one of |
| 21 | | which must be English and the other of which may be English |

school year must, in addition to other course |
| 11 | | requirements, successfully
complete all of the following |
| 12 | | courses: |
| 13 | | (1) Four years of language arts. |
| 14 | | (2) Two years of writing intensive courses, one of |
| 15 | | which must be English and the other of which may be English |
| 16 | | or any other subject. When applicable, writing-intensive |
| 17 | | courses may be counted towards the fulfillment of other |
| 18 | | graduation requirements.

| 19 | | (3) Three years of mathematics, one of which must be |
| 20 | | Algebra I, one of which must include geometry content, and |
| 21 | | one of which may be an Advanced Placement computer science |
| 22 | | course if the pupil successfully completes Algebra II or an |
| 23 | | integrated mathematics course with Algebra II content. |
| 24 | | (4) Two years of science. |
| 25 | | (5) Two years of social studies, of which at least one |
| 26 | | year must be history of the United States or a combination |

| 1 | | of history of the United States and American government and |
| 2 | | at least one semester must be civics, which shall help |
| 3 | | young people acquire and learn to use the skills, |
| 4 | | knowledge, and attitudes that will prepare them to be |
| 5 | | competent and responsible citizens throughout their lives. |
| 6 | | Civics course content shall focus on government |
| 7 | | institutions, the discussion of current and controversial |
| 8 | | issues, service learning, and simulations of the |
| 9 | | democratic process. School districts may utilize private |
| 10 | | funding available for the purposes of offering civics |
| 11 | | education. |
| 12 | | (6) One year chosen from (A) music, (B) art, (C) |
| 13 | | foreign language, which shall be deemed to include American |
| 14 | | Sign Language, or (D) vocational education. |
| 15 | | (f) The State Board of Education shall develop and inform |
| 16 | | school districts of standards for writing-intensive |
| 17 | | coursework.
|
| 18 | | (f-5) If a school district offers an Advanced Placement |
| 19 | | computer science course to high school students, then the |
| 20 | | school board must designate that course as equivalent to a high |
| 21 | | school mathematics course and must denote on the student's |
| 22 | | transcript that the Advanced Placement computer science course |
| 23 | | qualifies as a mathematics-based, quantitative course for |
| 24 | | students in accordance with subdivision (3) of subsection (e) |
| 25 | | of this Section. |
| 26 | | (g) This amendatory Act of 1983 does not apply to pupils |

| 1 | | entering the 9th grade
in 1983-1984 school year and prior |
| 2 | | school years or to students
with disabilities whose course of |
| 3 | | study is determined by an individualized
education program.

| 4 | | This amendatory Act of the 94th General Assembly does not |
| 5 | | apply
to pupils entering the 9th grade in the 2004-2005 school |
| 6 | | year or a prior
school year or to students with disabilities |
| 7 | | whose course of study is
determined by an individualized |
| 8 | | education program.
|
| 9 | | (h) The provisions of this Section are subject to the |
| 10 | | provisions of
Section
27-22.05.
