SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the death of Kay Leonard Stephens of Naperville, who passed away on September 30, 2014; and

WHEREAS, Kay Stephens was born in LaPorte, Indiana on April 7, 1933; she graduated from DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana in 1953 with a bachelor's degree in music education; she married John Lewis Stephens, and they settled in Naperville in 1965; and

WHEREAS, Kay Stephens and her husband were involved in the founding of the Naperville Heritage Society in 1969; when St. John's Episcopal Church, the church she was musical director at, needed to be moved, the Society found a new location at a site now known as the Naper Settlement; and

WHEREAS, Kay Stephens always kept a busy schedule of charitable activities, music, gardening, training dogs, helping special-needs children, and raising her family; she planned antique shows, hosted Christmas pageants, developed a weed garden that is now managed by the Weed Ladies, penned a book about Naperville in the 1970s, and created a music education program at Little Friends, Inc.; when her husband passed, she created a pet education and training scholarship in his name to benefit the Animal Assisted Therapy program at Edward Hospital & Health Services in Naperville; and

WHEREAS, Kay Stephens received a master's degree in music from Northern Illinois University in 1986 at the age of 53; and

WHEREAS, Kay Stephens is survived by her 4 children, Susan, John, Ginger, and Jane; 9 grandchildren; and a great-grandchild; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of Kay Leonard Stephens, and extend our sincere condolences to her family, friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Kay Stephens as an expression of our deepest sympathy.
