| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to |
| 3 | | learn of the death of former Cook County Sheriff, Richard J. |
| 4 | | Elrod of Lincolnwood; and
|
| 5 | | WHEREAS, Richard Elrod was born in Chicago in 1934; he |
| 6 | | graduated from Riverside Military Academy in Gainesville, |
| 7 | | Georgia in 1951 and earned his undergraduate degree in |
| 8 | | political science at Northwestern University, where he played |
| 9 | | guard for the Wildcats; he married Marilyn Mann in June of 1955 |
| 10 | | and received his law degree from Northwestern 3 years later; |
| 11 | | and
|
| 12 | | WHEREAS, Richard Elrod worked as Assistant Corporation |
| 13 | | Counsel for the City of Chicago and became the city's chief |
| 14 | | prosecutor in 1965; and
|
| 15 | | WHEREAS, Richard Elrod was elected to the Illinois House of |
| 16 | | Representatives for one term before being elected sheriff; he |
| 17 | | served as Cook County Sheriff for 4 consecutive terms from 1970 |
| 18 | | to 1986, and as a Cook County Circuit Court Judge beginning in |
| 19 | | 1988; and
|
| 20 | | WHEREAS, Richard Elrod was passionate about the Chicago |
| 21 | | White Sox and the Chicago Bulls and was an avid fan of Broadway |

| 1 | | musicals; and
|
| 2 | | WHEREAS, Richard Elrod is survived by his wife and very |
| 3 | | best friend, Marilyn (nee Mann), with whom he spent 58 |
| 4 | | wonderful years of marriage; he was the loving father of Steven |
| 5 | | (Donna) Elrod and Audrey (Ron) Lakin; the doting and proud |
| 6 | | grandfather of Elizabeth (Russell) Mollen, Daniel Elrod, David |
| 7 | | Lakin and Lauren Lakin; the devoted son of the late Cook County |
| 8 | | Commissioner Arthur X. Elrod and the late Della Elrod Mulmat; |
| 9 | | the cherished brother of the late Gloria Sheppard (late Jules) |
| 10 | | Bliss; the fond brother-in-law of the late Dorothy (Dr. Irwin |
| 11 | | and Angela Hill) Marcus; the revered uncle of Barry (Hope) |
| 12 | | Sheppard, Robert (Elizabeth) Sheppard, Judi (John Hamel) |
| 13 | | Sheppard, Dr. Randall (Katy) Marcus, Sherry (Alan) Leventhal, |
| 14 | | and Melinda (AC Gonzalez) Marcus; as well as many |
| 15 | | great-nephews, great-nieces, and three great-great-nieces; |
| 16 | | therefore, be it

| 17 | | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL |
| 18 | | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of |
| 19 | | former Cook County Sheriff, Richard J. Elrod, and extend our |
| 20 | | sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew |
| 21 | | and loved him; and be it further

| 22 | | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be |
