SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the death of Francis William Carlborg of Geneva, who passed away on February 1, 2014; and

WHEREAS, Francis Carlborg was born in Evanston on November 23, 1928 to Sonja Myrtle and Francis Ulrich Carlborg; he graduated from Evanston Township High School in 1946, and earned his Bachelor of Arts in mathematics from Ripon College in 1950, his master's degree in mathematics from the University of Illinois in 1954, and his Ph.D. in statistics from the University of Chicago in 1964; he was a veteran of the Korean War and was posted at Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, Alabama; he married Deane Anne Houlahan in 1955; and

WHEREAS, Francis Carlborg began his career teaching mathematics at Rockford College; he settled in St. Charles in 1964, authored a textbook, and began a consulting practice as a statistician specializing in risk assessment for food additives and pesticides; and

WHEREAS, Francis Carlborg was a life-long athlete and enjoyed tennis, cycling, reading, theater, and bluegrass music; and

WHEREAS, Francis Carlborg was preceded in death by his parents, and by his sisters, Catherine Gilmartin and Elizabeth "Betty" Elliott; and

WHEREAS, Francis Carlborg is survived by his wife of 58 years, Deane; his children, Sonja Deane Carlborg, Anne Frances McCormack, and William Eric Carlborg; his sister, Sonja Campbell; and his 7 grandchildren; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of Francis William Carlborg, and extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Francis Carlborg as an expression of our deepest sympathy.
