| 2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | ||||||
| 3 | learn of the death of Donald E. Eckmann, who passed away on | ||||||
| 4 | July 4, 2013; and
| ||||||
| 5 | WHEREAS, Donald Eckmann was born in Chicago and raised in | ||||||
| 6 | Riverside; he was a longtime resident of Downers Grove; and
| ||||||
| 7 | WHEREAS, Donald Eckmann graduated from | ||||||
| 8 | Riverside-Brookfield High School and earned his Bachelor of | ||||||
| 9 | Arts in civil engineering from the University of Illinois at | ||||||
| 10 | Urbana-Champaign in 1956; and
| ||||||
| 11 | WHEREAS, After college, Donald Eckmann began working for | ||||||
| 12 | Alvord, Burdick, and Howson in Chicago, where he soon became an | ||||||
| 13 | expert in the practice of water and wastewater engineering and | ||||||
| 14 | was named a partner in 1969; while at the firm, he was | ||||||
| 15 | responsible for the design of waterworks facilities in | ||||||
| 16 | Illinois, Michigan, Iowa, Wisconsin, Indiana, Virginia, | ||||||
| 17 | Kentucky, and Monrovia, Liberia; and
| ||||||
| 18 | WHEREAS, During his tenure at Alvord, Burdick, and Howson, | ||||||
| 19 | Donald Eckmann served as the civil engineer responsible for | ||||||
| 20 | overseeing the design of the Lake Michigan water supply system | ||||||
| 21 | project, which helped lay the groundwork for more than 20 | ||||||
| |||||||
| |||||||
| 1 | DuPage County communities to receive Lake Michigan water from | ||||||
| 2 | Chicago; and | ||||||
| 3 | WHEREAS, Donald Eckmann retired from Alvord, Burdick, and | ||||||
| 4 | Howson in 2006; he continued as a part-time consultant at the | ||||||
| 5 | firm following the firm's acquisition by the engineering firm | ||||||
| 6 | of Donohue & Associates; and
| ||||||
| 7 | WHEREAS, Donald Eckmann served as president of the Illinois | ||||||
| 8 | Section and director of the national organization of the | ||||||
| 9 | American Society of Civil Engineers; he also served as | ||||||
| 10 | president of the Western Society of Engineers; and
| ||||||
| 11 | WHEREAS, In 1989, Donald Eckmann was the recipient of the | ||||||
| 12 | Distinguished Alumni Award from Illinois' Civil and | ||||||
| 13 | Environmental Engineering Alumni Association; in 1992, he was | ||||||
| 14 | named the Civil Engineer of the Year by the American Society of | ||||||
| 15 | Civil Engineers for his work on the Lake Michigan water supply | ||||||
| 16 | system project; and | ||||||
| 17 | WHEREAS, Donald Eckmann is survived by his wife of 56 | ||||||
| 18 | years, Arlene; his son, David; his daughters, Pam Kolzow and | ||||||
| 19 | Lora Kmieciak; and his 8 grandchildren; therefore, be it
| ||||||
| 20 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL | ||||||
| 21 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we, along with his | ||||||

| 1 | family and friends, mourn the passing of Donald E. Eckmann; and | ||||||
| 2 | be it further

| 3 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
| 4 | presented to the family of Donald Eckmann as an expression of | ||||||
| 5 | our sympathy.
