SENATE RESOLUTION

  
 
2    WHEREAS, The State of Illinois is home to thousands of 
3collegiate and professional wrestling athletes and many that 
4advance to national and international competition; and
  
 
5    WHEREAS, The United States is a key competitor in 
6international wrestling competition, especially the Olympic 
7Games, with 124 medals having been awarded to the United States 
8throughout history; and
  
 
9    WHEREAS, The sport of wrestling is fundamentally important 
10to the success of the United States in overall Olympic Games 
11competition; and
  
 
12    WHEREAS, Greco-Roman wrestling has been part of Olympic 
13competition since 1896; and

  
 
14    WHEREAS, Wrestling is a foundational activity for Illinois 
15youth and overall economic activity, which is made more robust 
16by the ultimate potential for Olympic success; therefore, be it
  
 
17    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL 
18ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we oppose the 
19International Olympic Committee ruling that freestyle and 
20Greco-Roman wrestling not be included in the 25 athletic

1competitions of the Olympics Games, given the immense local and 
2global impact that ruling will have; and be it further
  
 
3    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 
4delivered to the International Olympic Committee.
