| 2 | | WHEREAS, On April 16, 2014, the Sewol, a ferry traveling |
| 3 | | from Incheon to Jeju island, Korea
capsized and sank off the |
| 4 | | coast of Gwanmaedo Island; and
|
| 5 | | WHEREAS, The Sewol carried 476 passengers and crew, mostly |
| 6 | | students from Danwon High School
in Ansan City on their trip to |
| 7 | | Jeju island; and
|
| 8 | | WHEREAS, At least 284 passengers have been confirmed dead |
| 9 | | and at least 20 remain unaccounted for; and
|
| 10 | | WHEREAS, With the cause of this horrific accident still |
| 11 | | undetermined, authorities are
attempting to bring answers to |
| 12 | | grieving loved ones suffering the pain and devastation of |
| 13 | | losing a
cherished member of their family or not yet knowing |
| 14 | | the fate of their missing loved one; and
|
| 15 | | WHEREAS, The people of the State of Illinois stand |
| 16 | | steadfast in their solidarity with the Korean
American |
| 17 | | community saddened by this tragic accident and loss of precious |
| 18 | | lives; therefore, be it
|
| 19 | | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE |
| 20 | | NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that |

sincerest and heartfelt condolences and sympathy |
| 2 | | to the families of the victims and the entire
Korean community, |
| 3 | | especially those in Illinois; and be it further

| 4 | | RESOLVED, That we extend our support and best wishes for |
| 5 | | the survivors of this disaster as they
work to recover from |
| 6 | | their injuries; and be it further
|
| 7 | | RESOLVED, That we applaud the teachers and crew members who |
| 8 | | sacrificed themselves to save the
students at the final moment, |
| 9 | | thank the volunteers who rushed to the site to rescue the
|
| 10 | | passengers, and thank the men and women of the Republic of |
| 11 | | Korea Navy, the United States
Navy, and private organizations |
| 12 | | who assisted in rescue and recovery operations; and be it |
| 13 | | further
|
| 14 | | RESOLVED, That we encourage a thorough investigation in |
| 15 | | order to determine the cause, that
future disasters might be |
| 16 | | averted; and be it further
|
| 17 | | RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be |
| 18 | | presented to the executive directors of
Korean American Voter |
| 19 | | Organizing Initiative & Community Empowerment, James T. Hyun,
|
| 20 | | Jonghwa Jung, the Mid-west Korean American Veterans |
| 21 | | Association, and the Institute for Peace
