| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of |
| 3 | | Representatives are pleased to recognize the 200th anniversary |
| 4 | | of the West Eden Church; and
|
| 5 | | WHEREAS, The West Eden Church was established in 1813 by |
| 6 | | Hezekiah West; feeling the need for religious faith and |
| 7 | | education in the lives of those in the community, he originally |
| 8 | | used his home as the church and school for his family and a |
| 9 | | small settlement of nearby neighbors; due to the migration of |
| 10 | | people into the area, it soon became necessary to have larger |
| 11 | | quarters for the school and church; in 1813, the present site |
| 12 | | was chosen and a log church was constructed as the second |
| 13 | | Methodist church in Illinois; and
|
| 14 | | WHEREAS, The present church building was constructed in |
| 15 | | 1876 and dedicated in 1879; it has been remodeled and improved |
| 16 | | extensively on at least 2 occasions since original |
| 17 | | construction; and
|
| 18 | | WHEREAS, Early Methodist circuit rider, Peter Cartwright, |
| 19 | | visited and preached in the West Eden Church's original |
| 20 | | building as late as about 1870, beginning a continuous and |
| 21 | | active church organization providing religious experiences for |
| 22 | | the settlement over a period of 6 generations; and
