| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of |
| 3 | | Representatives wish to congratulate the congregation of St. |
| 4 | | Malachy Church and School on the occasion of the church's |
| 5 | | celebration of the 150th Anniversary of the Emancipation |
| 6 | | Proclamation; and
|
| 7 | | WHEREAS, The Emancipation Proclamation was issued by |
| 8 | | President Abraham Lincoln on January 1, 1863; the Proclamation |
| 9 | | declared that those enslaved in Confederate territory were to |
| 10 | | be immediately freed; and
|
| 11 | | WHEREAS, St. Malachy Church and School is the oldest |
| 12 | | serving Black Catholic School on Chicago's West Side; the |
| 13 | | church, which was established in 1882, was home to the first |
| 14 | | black priest who served in Chicago, Roland Lambert, who was a |
| 15 | | pioneer in the teaching of black history; St. Malachy was also |
| 16 | | once home to Mother Teresa and her order, who lived at the |
| 17 | | church and worked in the community; and
|
| 18 | | WHEREAS, St. Malachy Church is an active participant in the |
| 19 | | Chicago community; the church administers programs for the |
| 20 | | homeless and the poor in the community and runs an afterschool |
| 21 | | program for the school and surrounding CPS Schools; the church |
| 22 | | also continues to educate and inform the community of the |
