HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives wish to congratulate the congregation of St. Malachy Church and School on the occasion of the church's celebration of the 150th Anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation; and

WHEREAS, The Emancipation Proclamation was issued by President Abraham Lincoln on January 1, 1863; the Proclamation declared that those enslaved in Confederate territory were to be immediately freed; and

WHEREAS, St. Malachy Church and School is the oldest serving Black Catholic School on Chicago's West Side; the church, which was established in 1882, was home to the first black priest who served in Chicago, Roland Lambert, who was a pioneer in the teaching of black history; St. Malachy was also once home to Mother Teresa and her order, who lived at the church and worked in the community; and

WHEREAS, St. Malachy Church is an active participant in the Chicago community; the church administers programs for the homeless and the poor in the community and runs an afterschool program for the school and surrounding CPS Schools; the church also continues to educate and inform the community of the church's history; and

WHEREAS, St. Malachy Church was honored by former Cardinal John Bernardin of the Chicago Archdiocese for its work in the community with the poor; and

WHEREAS, The congregation of St. Malachy Church and School will celebrate this momentous occasion on June 29, 2013 at St. Malachy Church; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we congratulate the congregation of St. Malachy Church and School on the occasion of the church's celebration of the 150th Anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to St. Malachy Church and School as a symbol of our esteem and respect.
