| 2 | | WHEREAS, Illinois State Senator Edward D. Maloney, a proud |
| 3 | | Chicago "South-Sider", was born in Evergreen Park; and
|
| 4 | | WHEREAS, Senator Maloney attended Lewis University and |
| 5 | | earned his bachelor's degree in political science; his passion |
| 6 | | for education led him to later earn his master's degree in |
| 7 | | education from Chicago State University; and
|
| 8 | | WHEREAS, Senator Maloney served as a teacher, guidance |
| 9 | | counselor, administrator, and coach at the Oak Lawn High |
| 10 | | School; he also served as a manager and professional developer |
| 11 | | for the Chicago Park District; and |
| 12 | | WHEREAS, Senator Maloney's passion for education |
| 13 | | exemplified itself through his position as Dean and Principal |
| 14 | | of Brother Rice High School in Chicago; and
|
| 15 | | WHEREAS, Senator Maloney began his career as a legislator |
| 16 | | when he served in the 87th General Assembly as a member of the |
| 17 | | Illinois House of Representatives from 1992 to 1993; and
|
| 18 | | WHEREAS, Senator Maloney's desire to assist the citizens of |
| 19 | | Chicago's Southside led to his bid for election to the Illinois |
| 20 | | State Senate in 2002, where he has served the families of the |
|

| 1 | | 18th District; and |
| 2 | | WHEREAS, Senator Maloney's background in education |
| 3 | | prepared him for his role as Chairperson for the Senate Higher |
| 4 | | Education Committee, which he has chaired since 2005; and
|
| 5 | | WHEREAS, Senator Maloney has brought real world and |
| 6 | | professional education experience to the Senate, advocating |
| 7 | | for innovative ways to assist students and make college more |
| 8 | | affordable through the Monetary Award Program; and
|
| 9 | | WHEREAS, Senator Maloney helped the cause of education by |
| 10 | | sponsoring legislative initiatives that expand student access |
| 11 | | to colleges and universities by lowering the age requirement |
| 12 | | for those taking the General Equivalency Test (GED) and |
| 13 | | allowing Illinois residents to rehabilitate their defaulted |
| 14 | | student loans; and |
| 15 | | WHEREAS, Senator Maloney has sought to reduce the sharp |
| 16 | | decline in the number of professional nurses across the State |
| 17 | | by proposing legislation that would provide scholarship |
| 18 | | incentives to attract more individuals to the profession; and
|
| 19 | | WHEREAS, Senator Maloney has served on and led numerous |
| 20 | | other committees during his tenure in the Senate, including the |
| 21 | | Senate Committees on Labor (Vice Chairperson), Appropriations |
|

| 1 | | I, Appropriations II, Redistricting, Transportation, Consumer |
| 2 | | Protection, Deficit Reduction, Local Government, Labor and |
| 3 | | Commerce (Vice Chairperson), and Revenue; and |
| 4 | | WHEREAS, Senator Maloney has a strong record of protecting |
| 5 | | children by proposing harsher punishments for school employees |
| 6 | | who failed to disclose their sexually-based offenses, while |
| 7 | | also educating children about internet safety and the harmful |
| 8 | | effects of steroid abuse; and |
| 9 | | WHEREAS, Senator Maloney has sought to ensure the health of |
| 10 | | Illinois citizens by proposing and passing legislation |
| 11 | | increasing emergency resources for persons with disabilities |
| 12 | | and criminalizing fraudulent health insurance policies; and |
| 13 | | WHEREAS, Senator Maloney has always been a champion of |
| 14 | | evaluating educational programs on their performance measures |
| 15 | | and seeking to better prepare educators for the struggles |
| 16 | | within the classroom through teacher-to-teacher mentoring |
| 17 | | programs; and |
| 18 | | WHEREAS, Senator Maloney was named "Legislature of the |
| 19 | | Year" in 2008 by the Illinois State Crime Commission and the |
| 20 | | Associated Firefighters of Illinois; and |
| 21 | | WHEREAS, Senator Maloney and his wife, Norine, currently |

| 1 | | live in Chicago, where he raised his 4 sons, Brian, Matthew, |
| 2 | | Daniel, and Martin; he has also been blessed with 10 amazing |
| 3 | | and energetic grandchildren; and |
| 4 | | WHEREAS, Senator Maloney's retirement from the Illinois |
| 5 | | Senate will not only deeply affect the performance of the |
| 6 | | Senate Softball Team, but will more importantly affect everyone |
| 7 | | who serves here as we will lose his wisdom, humor, and deep |
| 8 | | dedication; therefore, be it
|
| 9 | | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL |
| 10 | | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we thank Senator Edward |
| 11 | | D. Maloney for his years of service to the people of Illinois |
| 12 | | and honor him with this resolution; and be it further
|
| 13 | | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be |
| 14 | | presented to Senator Maloney as a symbol of our gratitude and |
| 15 | | with our best wishes for his future endeavors.
