SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the death of Jennie J. Zabukovec of Waukegan, who passed away on June 5, 2012; and

WHEREAS, She was born on December 18, 1928, in North Chicago, to Joseph and Johanna Zalaznik; she graduated from Waukegan Township High School in 1946; she was a member of the History Club; and

WHEREAS, She worked for Great Lakes Naval Training Center before and after the birth of her children; she worked as a secretary for the Chaplain Service during the Vietnam War, and was instrumental in providing letters and food for the soldiers and injured veterans at Great Lakes Naval Hospital; she also worked for Fiscal Service as an Accounting Clerk; she retired from the Naval Training Center, and then worked as a lunchroom supervisor for the Waukegan School System; and

WHEREAS, Her faith guided her throughout her life; she was a member of Mother of God Church, where she and her husband co-chaired dinner dances; as a member of St. Dismas Parish, she was actively involved with the Women's Club, funeral lunches, crafts for the bazaars, and the rummage sales; she was honored as the 2002 Woman of the Year for the St. Dismas Women's Club; and

WHEREAS, She was a member of the Slovenic National Home Society and St. Joseph's KSKJ Lodge 53; she played basketball in many KSKJ tournaments; she had a great love of family, the church, crocheting, crafts, gardening, baking, and cooking; her kitchen table was always surrounded by friends and family, and full of wonderful food and drink; she was a second mother to many, and she was a great friend; and

WHEREAS, She carried on many Slovenian traditions and passed along her secret recipes; in 2011, she traveled with family to the birthplace of her parents; she enjoyed following the Cubs with her husband in their personal Sky Box, and she loved to sing and dance, especially polkas and the Chicken Dance; and

WHEREAS, She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of over 62 years, John Zabukovec; her parents, Joseph and Johanna Zalaznik; her sisters-in-law, Mildred Terchek and Alice Pasiewicz; and her brothers-in-law, Edward Pasiewicz and John Terchek; and

WHEREAS, Jennie Zabukovec is survived by her daughters, Jamie Zabukovec (Larry Thompson), Judy Derra, Janice (Richard) Davis, and Julie Zabukovec (Rob McKay); she will be dearly missed by her grandchildren, Tesia Derra (Agim Alijoski) and Meredith and John Tanner Davis; as well as her great-grandchildren, Adelina, Bekim, and Lule Alijoski; she is also survived by her brother, Fred (Marie) Zalaznik, and her sister-in-law, MaryAnne (Albert) Gilbert; she was loved by many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews, Janet (Marty) Anderson, Larry (Debbie), Gerry, and John Zalaznik, Joan (Bill) Marsh, Eddie (Gail) Pasiewicz, Geri Gilbert, Bill (Jeannie) Marsh, Theresa (John) Brouillard, Michael, Lindy, Eric, Torie, and Alex Pasiewicz; and many other relatives; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with her family and friends, the passing of Jennie Zabukovec; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Jennie Zabukovec as a symbol of our sincere sympathy.
