|
| 2 | | WHEREAS, Polish Constitution Day has been celebrated in |
| 3 | | Chicago, home of the largest Polish community outside of |
| 4 | | Warsaw, Poland, for 115 years; and
|
| 5 | | WHEREAS, The Polish Constitution was the first democratic |
| 6 | | constitution in Europe and the second in the world after the |
| 7 | | United States Constitution; it was ratified on May 3, 1791; and
|
| 8 | | WHEREAS, The Polish Constitution demonstrates the |
| 9 | | commitment of Poles to human rights, to protection from jail |
| 10 | | without a trial, and to religious freedom, especially for |
| 11 | | European Jews, who at the time faced discrimination in most |
| 12 | | European nations; and
|
| 13 | | WHEREAS, Poles celebrate the Constitution for its ideals, |
| 14 | | that liberty and independence are vital to the strength of a |
| 15 | | people and a nation, and that a government that does not |
| 16 | | respect the rights of its people cannot and should not survive; |
| 17 | | and
|
| 18 | | WHEREAS, Polish Constitution Day was celebrated with a |
| 19 | | parade in Chicago on May 5, 2012; therefore, be it
|
| 20 | | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL |
